Confederate Monument Defaced With Anti-White Messages

The large Confederate monument on Broad Street was defaced with spraypainted anti-white messages.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has responded, and witnesses at the scene in the 700 block of Broad told a Chronicle reporter they noticed someone spray painting the landmark at about 8:30 p.m.

Messages were marked in black and include the words black power, I hate whites and cracker killers as well as an obscenity against whites in large letters.

Just like it's impossible to talk positively about Strom Thurmond without bringing up the oppression of African Americans, it's impossible to talk about those who fought for the South in the civil war without focusing on slavery, which history, both from an insider and outsider perspective, has shown the South was on the wrong side of the "debate".

Still, I stand by my opinion it was white supremacists who vandalized the monument attempting to stir up anger against African Americans.

Well, sounds to me like someone needs a history lesson first off because the Confederacy wasn't a white supremacist state. It was pro-slavery and I'm not saying it was a nice place. But Oklahoma (then Indian Territory) did cede from the Union, and the Cherokee (along with the Choctaw, Chickasaw and some others) were some of the biggest slave owners in the west. Tellingly there were members of most Indian nations in Indian Territory who fought for the CSA, including some officers.

Now, that said, I'm not going to deny that it is a valid part of the State's history and should be acknowledged as such. BUT you also have to bear in mind that ceding from the Union and declaring war on the US was... well tantamount to treason. We (the Union) fought them and won. Thats why we are still one country today instead of two. And while the Union troops were hardly innocent of murder and pillage, its not like the Confederates were all that "heroic" either.

So yeah, I AM a little uneasy about the idea of a Confederate monument in the first place since it IS rather anti-US by default.

That said, yes. This is a crime and should be punished. But its still vandalism. Not murder or rape which makes it a little less than your histrionics would seem to indicate. Moreover its always possible its a hoax done by whites to incite exactly this sort of reaction. Remember the woman who carved a 'b' into her face and said Obama supporters did it? Or the professor who hung a noose in his office and said white students did it? People do this sort of shit all the time for attention.

On the other hand let me also point out how selective you are. When a Mosque gets vandalized your type tends not to say a word.

R.E. Lee, Jackson and the vast majority of Southerners fought for their country. To say otherwise is to ignore the facts. These men were not— by and large— politicians.


Do you really understand how miserable Lee's life was? Through it all, his stoicism, character and devotion to duty have ever after served as a legitimate and praiseworthy inspiration and example to thousands of young men.


Very few people comprehend the debt of gratitude owed to Lee by the United States. As detailed in numerous books, particularly Jay Winik's April, 1865, Lee had only to give the word to his army to pursue the war by unconventional means and there would never have been a surrender at Appomattox. There were many who urged that course upon him. Had his men "taken to the hills," it is not at all unlikely that the U.S. would have been balkanized and the damn fighting would still be going on a century later. His decision to surrender was painful and humiliating. As Lee himself put it, "Now I must go see General Grant and I would rather die a thousand deaths."


Here's one example:

Many years after the war, Mosby explained why, although he disapproved of slavery, he fought on the Confederate side. While he believed the South had seceded to protect slavery, he said, in a 1907 letter, that he had felt it was his patriotic duty to Virginia. "I am not ashamed of having fought on the side of slavery —a soldier fights for his country — right or wrong — he is not responsible for the political merits of the course he fights in ... The South was my country."
