Need help making a hood

I am not very good at sewing.. I can sew pillowcases, some kinds of curtains and I have made children's Halloween costumes that at least make it through trick-or-treating and that is about it.

I have been told to design and make a hood for myself. It must be made of black velvet or satin (or similiar material). No holes for the eyes but there is to be a zipper for the mouth and maybe nose area. I also have to figure out how to secure the neck.

Another thing to keep in mind--I have claustophobia and fear of asphyiation. So I need to make sure the hood can be removed quickly in case I start to freak. (which I really hope I don't because I really really want to do this)

Has anyone ever made one? I am thinking I want to make it somewhat fitted as opposed to being similiar to a pillowcase. If I do it in 3 or four keyhole panals sewed together would that work? I have quite a few ideas and I was planning on practicing on extra (inexpensive) material first but I was just wondering if anyone had done this before.

Thanks in advance.

Could it be done in 2 halves? (Left and right.)
For the neck, how about "button holes" around the base that a ribbon or lace can go through and pulled snug?

Maybe you could look at a "store bought" hood and copy it, or get ideas from this one:

Thanks so much for the link. Lots of fun stuff on that site. :) The hoods withthe removable blindfold look like a good idea. I will have to ask if i may do that.

My original idea was a pull string type of closure at the neck. It would be easy enough even for me to do.

Thanks again.

For my first sewing event I would stay away from spandex and stretch satin.

She said from experience.

Perhaps look at a few balaclava patterns. First one that came up in Google was this . Totally concur with Netz stay away from stretch satin. Velvet may be easier for lack of fray , though it also comes in a stretch version. I would be inclined to consider tiny hand sewn press studs in a back seam so removal can be made in seconds and aid with the psychological issues in regards to claustrophobia and asphyxiation.

As to the zippers. Good luck , I would prefer to fire walk than deal with them :rose:

Do you knit ?

I love hoods. They're one of my favorite things. Please post pics when you finish so I can drool. :)

You're a better person than I am. I can't sew to save my life. I'd be far more inclined to just buy one somewhere and swear I made it. :p

Ahh yes sheer genius.

Here are some extra links , though to books.

Domiknitrix ~ There is a hood pattern in this one on page 159.

Naughty Needles

I heard a podcast interview between Nikol Lohr who designed Naughty Needles and Professor Tom last week . Apparently Nikol hails from Kansas , like our darling Shankara. Nikol said her Mom is actually the model for the Mrs Robinson knit in the book, in fact all the models are family and friends . Cute .

Thanks..No, I don't knit at all or crochet or sew or any of those really talented things some people can do. Sometimes I wish I had listened to my mother more when she tried to teach me these things. But Thanks. I'll remember to stay away from the spandex material.

rebecca The zipper is something I am worried about. The only experience I have is when I had to put one into a skirt in 7th grade Home Ec. It's the only class I ever got a C in. My Dom is insisting on a zipper though so I'll give it a try. The press studs in the back seam sounds like a great idea. I would love to look through that Naughty Needles book even without being able to knit. (or maybe I sill ask my mother to teach me, just not tell her why)

Thanks!

It'll be a challenge making it but I think making it as opposed to buying it will help me with the mental aspect. Sort of- I will be less afraid of something I have made myself. Also I can make it the way I want. Plus hopefully it will end up being less expensive. (I'm already spending big bucks on a spanking skirt to go with it) If I am allowed I will be sure to post pictures.

You might want to go with velcro for the closure in back. That's an even faster way to open and it does secure rather well.

I agree with the advice on staying away from stretchy fabrics. Also be careful about slippery ones if this is your first sewing project as they can be just as big a pain in the butt to sew on. And you have my simpathies on the zipper thing... I HATE having to sew those into anything!

Good luck and please do post a pic! :rose:

I'd also agree with Velcro for the closure in back. You could get the two inch Velcro and that way it can be more adjustable to fit. And it's easy to mess with. The two sides come in a kit at hardware stores and hobby stores, and you just sew them in place.

You can also get do it yourself snaps at hobby stores. I've used them with very practical results. I have a pair of pants that the hook closure broke, and I just installed a snap there, instead. I think the snap will last longer then the origiional hook type did.

The snap kits I've used come with a lot of snap parts (in case you make a mistake, you can redo), a small punch and a small anvil. The only other tool you need is a hammer. And the process is pretty simple to do. Shit, if you can sew, you can do this. I couldnl't begin to sew.

The Velcro is the easiest and probably the option that makes the most sence. There are different colors available, but I've mostly seen black and white. The snaps would probably look cooler, because they are silver colored and if you get a dark color material, it would look good.

Maybe a combination of the two, using snaps down the back and Velcro at the neck to secure it.

velcro is a good idea. i also use snaps often instead of zippers. be aware of how well the fabric you chose "breathes". if it doesnt breathe well then it can get pretty hot inside of whatever you make.

ETA: DVS types faster them me

I have a leather hood with eye holes. The only time I use it is Halloween. I wear it with a black graduation gown. I've actually frightened some kids. It's funny though, seems like every year some 14 year old girl comes and thinks it's really cool. :p

Nary a chuckle? These are purely to make you giggle. Tough audience. :) But I have knitter's humor which is kind of lame...

I would check www.craftster.org for some tutorials on simple sewing with photos - also not everyone would automatically freak the hell out if you mention you're making something for bedroom games as long as you're not too graphic about it. Check the bag and purse section for zipper insertion tutorials.

I wish I could knit faster. That snow devil hood looked really cool but would take me a year to make. :(

And I loath zippers. I avoid them like the plague. I'd rather do button holes than zippers....which is a really good thing about making ren garb....all gromets. :D

Not to worry Netz..I LMAO'd. Scary! That site reminded me of one of my all-times favs.. http://www.candyboots.com/wwcards.html /hijack

Ecstaticsub..sorry I can't offer any help with the hood. They scare the ever lovin' crap outa me. Good luck with your project and please let us know how it turns out.

Fair starts saturday here :nana:

gotta get a weekend off work when I have some mulah tho...I'm beyond broke this check. :(

You all are a great help--thank you!!

I'm not sure about using velcro. It seems that any velcro stuff I have (like my cuffs) end up accidently sticking to something else during storage. I think I am leaning toward using elastic at the bottom and then tieing the back with ribbon.

Netzach Sorry..Usually I have a sense of humor, really. that is until I start to sink all my energies into a project. The funny thing is my mother used to knit us snow masks when we were kids..some which were quite ridiculous. ANd thank you so much for the link to craftster. It took me a while to find a tutorial for a zipper that I thought I could follow and made sense for a hood but I did. I was just going to wing it but this will be much better. Thanks.

myinnerslut Getting too hot inside the hood would be close to making it unbearable. I think I am going to have to spend sometime in a fabic store figuring things out. It's a good thing I have plenty of time before it has to be finished.

Thanks again!

callinectes They scare me too...lol

Just wanted to let you all know I finished the hood and brought it on m trip to see Daddy last week. It was a great success. Thanks again for your help with a special thank you to A Desert Rose for giving me some great ideas and helping me figure out the zipper. I ended up making it out of velveeteen. I made 4 panels joined together and then used elastic at the bottom. It fit very snugly. It felt even better after Daddy put my larger collar on over the bottom and padlocked it shut. Since it had the eye holes, was cloth, and the zipper I could still breath almost normally. The only time I really felt any panic was when I was deep throating him.

I promised some pictures and now that I have received permission to post them, here they are.

I wore the hood with my latex spanking skirt (which I fell in love with--I loved the feel, the way it bound my legs together, the overall effect)

Yes, there are eye holes. But there was also a blindfold that went over them.

A girl has to begin somewhere..lol
