Katoree is one of the few remaining forest nymphs alive. Most of her kind has vanished from the world for various reasons, the biggest reason being the greedy humans that are controlling more land. Katoree though, has chosen to stay in this realm and watch what will become of the world around her. Although autumn is her particular season, she is out most of the year causing mischief to the human hunters and other species that still roam this realm. The trolls, ogres, and giants are especially fun to mess around with, they are so big and slow that it amuses her to ‘play’ little games with them. It is even more fun when they are sleeping to pester them, making them slap themselves as she tickles them. More often than not she remains small enough to not be seen, making easy escapes.
There is a cave deep in the woods that has always struck her interests on her daily route. It is like no other cave that she could tell, it had a different vibe every time she went past it. There was something in there, or it lead to somewhere. It didn't hold any creatures within it. She knew this because she has been watching it for some time, no tracks, and no remnants of animal or any creature. The mouth of the cave was your typical entrance; it even had a small creek like waterfall down the center. Katoree would sit outside of this cave, playing in the trees to see if there would be any activity. There were even moments when she thought of making it her new home; everything about it was perfect for her. All except for that strange vibe that filled the air around it, of course.
It was finally time for her to gain the courage to go exploring this mysterious cave. Katoree took a deep breath, pulled her long, rusty red hair back into a pony tail. Once she got to the mouth of the cave, she formed into full human size, standing just under six foot, without knowing what was in the cave she figured it would be best to be big rather than pixie size. Once she stepped in everything went black, even the mouth of the cave behind her went black, like a door had just closed but there was none. Katoree had a difficult time adjusting her eyes to the darkness, barely making out the shape of the walls that surrounded her. Just barely enough for her to use her hand along the wall and guide her to where this place led.
For the longest time it was difficult to tell if her eyes were opened or closed. The tunnel seemed to never end, luckily for her the wall was smooth and felt more like a smooth gem than the rough dirty earth that one would expect. Soon the walls began to glitter, as if they had fairy dust covering them. Within a few more steps she had to blink a few times when she saw the wall ahead of sparkling. Still no light, just shimmering glitter off the wall. This followed as she got closer the light started to shine from some room.
It hurt her eyes as she entered what seemed like a normal size room, it had piles bright, gleaming jewels and gold. The more her eyes adjusted, she realized that the room was huge and spacious with a massive fireplace that had gargoyles bordering it, pillars with various statues of gargoyles and dragons that seemed to play in the shadows. A ceiling to floor mirror stretched along another wall, which scared her for a moment thinking someone else was in the room.
Once she realized it was her reflection, she examined herself for a few moments, never have seen herself with such detailed reflection intrigued her. The grey eyes that stared back at her held her captive for quite some time, studying the hint of freckles against her pale skin. Soon she flushed deeply after realizing that she was admiring her own reflection and began exploring the rest of the room
What attracted her the most was the box partially buried in one of the piles. This room seem as if it was empty of life except hers, as far as she could tell there was nothing here to lead into another room. Cautiously she crept her way towards the pile, tracing her fingers over the box then lifting the lid. Inside was the most beautiful necklace she has ever seen in all her life.
The black onyx and deep amethyst that ran throughout the whole piece seemed to respond to her touch. When she held it up to her neck there was a sudden urge to put it on, to be the only treasure that she would want to keep. It seemed like it would be a snug fit, like a choker or perhaps a collar. Every fiber in her being was aching to put it on, as if the necklace itself was demanding it.
Her heart started pounding as a sudden feeling emerged, a need to leave this place. Katoree put the necklace down and proceeded to escape the strange room.
