A barely better deal won’t win midterm elections in 2018

Franklin Delano Roosevelt had the New Deal. Lyndon B. Johnson had the War on Poverty and Great Society. Bernie Sanders had (has) the Political Revolution.

Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have A Better Deal — better than the Republicans’ deal, presumably.

What is most shocking about this so-called ‘Better Deal’ is its embrace of Republican Party trickle-down economics in the form of tax breaks for businesses. Tax breaks do not create jobs nor do they train workers. The problems facing the American worker today arise from the changing structure of American capitalism — the post-industrial revolution — not ‘lack of skills’ or ‘lack of training.’ The entire coal industry employs fewer people than Arby’s; are we really to think that job training people is going to change the structural and macroeconomic factors that make Arby’s a larger employer than an entire sector of the old industrial economy?

If Democrats and progressives want to win the 2018 midterm elections, they have to offer something a lot bolder, simpler, and more exciting than a barely better deal. One need not be a fan of a revolutionary socialist Eugene Debs to grasp that the country faces enormous challenges and serious problems that are too big for Clintonian half-way solutions or slightly re-jigged Reaganomics devised by a criminally overpaid consultant class that gets paid regardless of job performance (a perfect example of a rigged economy held in place by a corrupt political system if there ever was one).

Their voters want, "Free stuff: free education, free healthcare, free transportation and free border crossings."

That's what will attract the kind of voter that they want to energize...

I'm going to give you a better wage at Hardy's!

Vote for me!

Can't you just increase my food stamps and get me unlimited data on my free phone?

Medicaid claw back

I wonder how many people receiving Medicaid know about this...
Although it may be your most valuable asset, owning a home will not disqualify you from receiving Medicaid. You do not have to sell it to pay for medical care prior to receiving Medicaid. However, every state has an "estate recovery" program in which, following death, the value of your home may be used to reimburse the state for the Medicaid funds it provided.

That's why they sell their homes for a $1 to the children as an early inheritance and then the government picks up the tab for their stay in a nursing home...

;) ;)

Medicaid has a 5 year "look back" period.

Since the IRS will consider the $1 transaction part sale/part gift, I hope the home sellers filed IRS Form 709, United States Gift (and Generation-Skipping Transfer) Tax Return for exceeding the annual gift tax exclusion (currently $14K).

Woah, it smells like socks and stale underwear in this thread... I didn't realize you guys were having a circle jerk in here.

Carry on!

They'll abandon better for free...

And that's there is the meat.

Which works well for pol's....they can dangle the free goods carrot out there and deliver 'slightly better' like they did with ACA endlessly.

If they had fulfilled their mandate and done something in the same zip code as their sales pitch, they would loose their biggest, shiniest carrot to dangle in front of their voters.

Gotta give them something to want, just like the R's need to give their folks something to hate, so ACA or it's 'slightly' revised (R) approved version will stay.

Congress needs to be fuckin' fired.

I think you have this ass backwards. If the Republicans want to retain their seats in congress, they need to get busy and do what they promised they would do. They have a majority so have no excuse. Personally I think they've painted themselves into a corner and they're damned if they do and damned if they don't, but that's just my opinion. Whether I'm right or not will be born out in the next couple of congressional elections. Be that as it may, the Republicans in congress need to starting getting things done, one way or the other. And please don't try to tell me it's the Dems fault. For 8 years the Repubs had a united front, now they are falling apart, fracturing into small opposed pieces. They had best get their shit together. If they don't they will be returned to the vocal, impotent minority they were.

Comshaw

100%.

They will pass some trash soon, and the (D)'s who will be TOTALLY united on all that good sounding shit will once again fall apart and pass total turds when they get the keys to the empire back. Just like last time.

The only time either party is united is when it's "Fuck the other team we're such victims and so are you!! Vote for us and we'll show these assholes!!" then they get in power and suddenly all the special interest come out at the feeding trough and you wind up with ACA's and Monsanto Protection acts.

All just more of the same ol' shit as far as congress is concerned and until we remove the ability for special interests to go buy a committee/reps/senators or the majority of congress in some cases of the uber rich. Then that same ol' bullshit will continue.
