Rory, how the FUCK is this racist? I'm stating a fact - go watch the news or read the news article. The African-American community IS PISSED (that is a fact!) and the entire city of Oakland is boarded up and Oakland Police are on stand-by for possible riots. If they riot, it'll be the LA Riots all over again. That's a factual statement. I don't know why they are so pissed - the cop is being sent to jail.

Why the change?
In the summer of 1965, my older brother and younger sister and I were living in a three bedroom apartment with my divorced mom in Canoga Park, CA. My mom and dad's split-up was still a raw wound, but we did have a swimming pool right in the middle of the complex! 
I remember coming into our apartment late in the afternoon after a full, summer vacation day at the pool and seeing some kind of craziness going on whatever the black and white TV was tuned to...you'd see a guy running out to the middle of a street, throwing something...a distant camera angle from a hovering helicopter capturing the roofs of buildings of entire city blocks afire...ranks and files of police suited-up in what I then had no idea was called "riot gear"...all-in-all it was a totally bizarre experience that was just beginning...for days and then weeks the mental trauma on my young mind was enormous, all from what was going on in Watts, just not that far away.
Believe it or not, THAT was this-then 10-year old white boy's introduction to "race"...

Some of my parents friends lived down in LA when the Watts riots happened. I've heard similar stories - that must have been scary as a 10 year old. Damn.

Yeah I can see that. Prisoners don't forget vendettas. I have a buddy who worked corrections for years. He told me similar stories but it was gang members who got out and killed the families of rival gang members. That shit happens all the time when prisoners are finally released because they have to avenge the wrong that was done to them in prison, or get even with rival gangs that fucked them up while they were in prison.
