Obama: Hey, 9.6% Unemployment Rate Isn’t That Bad, It Could be 12 or 13 or 15%…

Does he have any idea how much of an asshole he sounds like?…

President Obama told a Wisconsin town hall today that the unemployment rate is lower than it would be if the Recovery Act (the stimulus) had not passed.

Obama told the audience “unemployment’s at 9.6%.” That is above the 8% the administration predicted with the stimulus implemented.

“Yes, but it’s not 12 or 13 or 15,” Obama said defending his policy.

The economy “recovered more than people expected last year,” he added.

“Things aren’t as bad as they could have been, this could have been a catastrophe, in that sense it [the stimulus] worked,” Obama claimed.

Remember back before he was sworn in, when his economic team was pushing that chart that showed unemployment topping out at eight percent or so if we gave him whatever moneybomb he asked for?

Those days are looooong gone; now, instead of talking about how much higher the unemployment rate is than he thought it’d be, we’re talking about how much higher it could have been without that $787 billion bomb. And the nice thing about that, of course, is that he can slap any horrifying figure he wants on his worst-case scenario to make the current figures look rosy.

For the moment he’s restricting himself to “12 or 13 or 15 percent,” but if he’s staring at a giant Republican wave come October, I bet that estimate will bump up to 20 or 25 percent in no time. Keep moving those goalposts, champ.
Oh, by the way: Not only is it entirely untrue that “every economist who’s looked at it said that the recovery [act] did its job,”

but not even every Keynesian who’s looked at said it did its job.

.

actually, it is that high or higher. unemployment rates only reflect those who are on the rolls and collecting money.
there are people who fell off the rolls because their benefits expired. the homeless, those UNDEREMPLOYED, etc.. if everything is factored in the unemployment rate is actually at about 18% or higher. that's nationally. if your state is at 14% , then say it is actually 28%. the government likes coverups to the truth to blind the masses.
