Maybe. Since we've not had an economic collapse since '72, there's no telling. I'd say it depends on just how bad it gets. The bread-and-circuses of mass media have divided class unity by making politics a sport. If things get bad enough, bread-and-circuses will not suffice.

The white majority in the United States is probably too individualistic to support a totalitarian leader on the right. What is more likely is a restoration of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, or that period of time between Reconstruction and the Progressive Era. Back then the government restricted its intervention in the economy to business subsidies, tariffs, and the violent suppression of trade union activity. Blacks were subjected to second class citizenship in the South and subdued by the terrorism of the Klu Klux Klan.

BTW, you are probably thinking of the inflationary recession of 1974. In 1972 the economy was fairly good. The recession of 1974 began the stagflation that culminated in the tax revolt and the election of Ronald Reagan.

Republican economic policies have the certain effect of making the rich richer. When per capital gross domestic is declining, that can only be achieved by making everyone else poorer. That is what did happen when George W. Bush was president.

I'd actually be inclined to agree with this assessment although I think it has far less to do ambiguities like "individualism" and far more to do with concrete elements like media control of the message.

Also, I don't see the rise of another Klan-type organization.

I'm not thinking of any particular economic event. My point is that we've not seen genuine economic disaster in this country since the Great Depression, and compared to someplace like Weimar Germany, we can't even say our "Great" depression was all that "Great." Given that fact, I don't think any particular prediction has much behind it.

That said, if we DO ever reach the point of true economic collapse, I'd say all bets are off regarding race as having a significant role in violent crime (except to the degree that minorities are generally lower on the economic ladder than the White majority). This country saw its largest rise in communist and socialist party membership in the 20s and 30s, and that was accompanied by riots and other social unrest.
