Should Taxpayers pay Car Repairs for the Poor?

I was at the supermarket checkout recently, and overheard a conversation between a guy and his wife. They are low income, and he got a citation for a cracked windshield. They have to get the windshield repaired withing 30 days, otherwise the citation turns into a ticket. They were discussing how to get the money.

After 30 days from citation, a ticket is issued for about $100.
Cost of replacement windshield (from a junk yard) is about $100.

They do not have the $100 for the windshield, let alone another $100 for the ticket.

What is the role, if any, of government in this case? For the poor, asking them to pay $100 is like asking them to pay $10,000 because each is equally unavailable.

Ultimately no.

The government doesn't have any significant role in this situation. Rules are rules even when they are stupid and occasionally destructive. I've been in that position myself and it's just a hole that keeps digging itself until/unless you suddenly come into some money.

Absolutely not.
Owning a car is not a right, it's a privelege [sp].
It comes with responsibilities and rules.

If my country starts helping people with cars, I will be forced to become one of those militant protesters that stand in front of Parliment house with placards screaming about the waste of my tax dollars.

They can go to court, explain the situation, and plead for an extension of the time. It does sometimes work.

The thing is maybe where you come from owning a car is a privelege, where I come from owning a car is a necessity. If you have to choose between paying rent and paying your car note go live in your car and get a gym membership so you have a place to shower. Without a car you're done.

They could always sell some plasma or cut a few yards. Earn some extra money. Babysit, wash some cars, etc. I know it sounds silly, but dollars add up. Eat mac and cheese and ramen. Save up and get it fixed. It's illegal but if they are on food stamps, they could do a trade food stamps for cash from a friend.

Having a car can be a necessary to get to work, sometimes a bus can't get there or it's too far for walking. I don't think tax payers should be on the hook directly for getting cars repaired.

The solution is to outlaw any form of private transportation.

Unless the vehicle is actually dangerous to use I don't think the government should tell you when to repair your car. I would love to repair my windsheild but I dont' have the extra cash lying about. It's kind of a place where everybody is wrong and we aren't likely to fix it anytime soon.

The reason they can't afford to fix their windshield is the same reason they have no money to fix the windshield, they're abysmally stupid.

First of all, if they happen to have any 'collision' insurance their insurer will pay, 100% regardless of the deductible. Won't cost them a dime.

Assuming that they don't even have that level of insurance, kick the fucking windshield out and buy safety goggles. Ever seen a Jeep on the street with the windshield folded down?

Idiots, fuck'em.

Where I live, I absolutely need to have a car.
I am 14 km from the closest public transport, in the country, on a road that gets maybe 5 cars a day (so hitching is not an option).
But - for a while there my car was broken down. I relied on lifts from neighbours and used my son's car when he wasn't at college.
I penny-pinched to the max to be able to fix my car (blew the head, so it was expensive.)

But never for a second did I think it was up to my government to help me!

Taxpayers have to pay for welfare, healthcare, transportation, education, and just about every single aspect of life -- all for the poor.

The poor are poor because they are apathetic.

Most of the poor people in the United States come from many, previous generations of poverty. They are happy and apathetic considering that they have a "free ride for life" and can make their living by collecting welfare checks and make money on the side from selling drugs and committing crimes.

Shady criminal elements of government and intelligence ensure that certain target audiences (mostly ethnic minorities) are kept uneducated and dumbed-down with things like sabotaged education, drugs, and rap music. So they can "use" these people as political voting blocs, to drive down property prices, to sell "government drugs" to, and so forth.

Tell me, how could those democrats possibly win an election without the existence of a pervasive nanny state?

Was there perhaps items in their grocery cart that they could have done without? I used to work close to a food bank and I would pass by and people would be standing in line smoking and chatting on a cell phone. It drove me crazy. People in America need to learn again what a necessity is.

Poor people think that cigarettes, cell-phones, laptop computers, alcohol, drugs, flat screen televisions, are all necessities.

Most of the poor folks I see at the grocery store have their carts filled with candy, soda, alcohol, magazines, and junk food. The middle class have their carts filled with things like breaded meat and processed foods. And finally, the clean cut, yuppie-type "rich" people have their carts filled with bottled water, fruit, wines, vegetables, lean meats, and "healthy" items.

Go figure.

Poor people are poor because they are stupid, uneducated, and ignorant. And the millions of working taxpayers in this country shouldn't need to pay for these people's destructive lifestyles. Poor people are usually overweight and unattractive. The "middle class" have average physiques. And the "wealthy" folks are in good shape, well-spoken, and are usually quite physically attractive.

Taxpayers should pay for the abortions and the vaccination/mass-sterilization of the poor. I've tried to feel sorry for these people, but I can't, because they make absolutely no effort whatsoever to get out of poverty. They repeat the exact same decadent, self-destructive lifestyles, generation after generation. Just like their ancestors.

I feel sorry for poor people in other countries like China, India, African countries, South American countries, and so forth. But I don't feel any pity for the poor in America.

Some people work 40+ hours and are still sweating it every month to pay rent, utilities, medical bills because insurance coverage in Americais terrible, and feed/clothe their kids. They might make the choice to have minimal auto insurance in order to say, buy their daughter's insulin.

You mean you heard that or met a couple that are like that. Then you generalized to a millions of people in a dizzying variety of circumstances.

I can understand that.
But if we now include car repairs in gov't handouts, where does it end?
Clothes?
Utilities?
How about vet bills for that beloved pet?

I don't think the government should pay for people's car repairs. Nobody thinks that.

And the OP's premise is flawed - people living in poverty can generally pay $100. They can set up a payment plan and pay $13 per month. The OP says they're low-income, not no-income and they already have a month to figure something out.

Our local transit authority did a study that concluded its cheaper to buy riders cars than it is to haul them in buses. That is, taxpayers contribute $9 for every $1 of fare collected from riders.

If the average ghetto bunny and trailer trash use the bus to get to work and back home 20 days each month, the cost to haul them around is $400. Making payments on a car is a lot cheaper.

Not true. People can get TANF money for car repairs if the repairs keeps the kids outta fostercare.

I know one old girl who got $1000 to fix her car, then sold the car!

If they lived in the UK they could apply for an emergency loan from Social Services - if the car was essential for their family.

If the loan was approved, they would have to repay it, plus interest, but the repayment term would reflect their income.

Nobody expects you to give a shit, Ish. Lord knows that. He was only explaining that an inability to afford better insurance, or get $100 for the repair, doesn't mean that somebody is stupid (as you claim). It only means they don't have $100 right then and times are tough.
