Virginia Grohl, whose son is Dave Grohl of the hugely successful Foo Fighters and, before that, Nirvana, decided to find out how her experience compared with other women in her situation: so she met the mothers of Pharrell Williams, Amy Winehouse, Dr Dre, Mike D of the Beastie Boys and a dozen or so more to talk about life as a “rock mum”.

When Virginia decided to meet these rock mothers it was Wendy, Kurt’s mother, who was “uppermost in my mind. She was the first ‘rock mom’ I met”. The two women made friends in New York City in 1992, a time when the “wave of Nirvana’s fame was cresting” and they were along for the ride – staying in fancy hotels, being chauffeur-driven to TV studios, “escorted by admiring young staffers”.

For reasons I'm not entirely sure of myself, starting last night I read two biographies of Richard III: Charles Ross's 1981 work, creatively titled Richard III, still considered the definitive one, and David Horspool's much more recent Richard III, A Ruler and His Reputation—which I had hoped would focus more on historiography than I felt it did.

I don't think I really learnt anything new.
