born in Dallas in 49

ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill passed away at his home in Houston, Texas, according to band members Frank Beard and Billy Gibbons.

It comes just a few days after the band said Dusty would be stepping back from tour to address a hip injury.

Hill reportedly died in his sleep.

They were one of the only bands that I've seen 3 nights in a row. They were in Dallas in the 80's and sold out Reunion Arena 3 nights in a row and I went each night!

This sucks. He influenced my own playing in a multitude of ways. A few years back I had an opportunity to go see them down in LA but I had to pull out at the last minute due to some I expected circumstances. I regret that didn't get a chance to see them now more than ever.

Saw them live back in their prime in 80 or 81...I went to see another band...forget who...but ZZTop were fucking really good

He was a great player. It's pretty sad news.

I really love what Vernon Reid of Living Colour said of Dusty:
"Dusty Hill was the kind of musician that could be in a world famous band, & be satisfied with making it work. Like Rick Laird, who also passed on recently, nobody seeming to notice. Getting it done with humility is the opposite of the narcissism that fuels modern music culture.'

RIP Dusty!! We were planning on seeing them next week in Lake of the Ozarks! It will be interesting to see if the show will go on!

12 bar blues aint exactly Chopin and there was nothing special about his playing.

Oh damn that sucks. ZZ Top was one of my mom's favorite bands and I remember listening to them quite often. My husband and I would always play their version of Viva Las Vegas when heading to the airport to fly there.

To be fair if you class all ZZ Top music as twelve bar blues you obviously haven't listened to much.

The best anyone ever said about Dusty Hill’s bass playing was that:

1. He could stay in the pocket in simple blues rock compositions;
2. He was sometimes noted as the kind of bass player that beginners could learn the basics from.

If you can provide links to credible reviews of his greatness as a musician, i would like to read them.

He wasnt anything special. Just a guy who did well in a 3 piece blues rock band.

Arguably, Billy Gibbons would be the one worth talking about…. As is often the case of the lead in most 3 piece combos.

As a person, at least Dusty wasnt the kind of guy that would name a smallish mountain after himself.

Isn't that great that this site allows most of us to voice our opinions no matter what others think of it .
I disagree but it is your right to express it .

Joy is one of humanity's greatest treasures.

Dusty Hill contributed to something that gave many people joy.

R.I.P.
