A rather angry Manchin told our Burgess Everett that Corn’s story was “bullshit.”

We talked to Corn on Wednesday night and came away with the impression of a reporter who is 1,000% sure his story was correct.

“The sourcing was impeccable,” Corn said. “Even if he had told me it was bullshit the story still would have run.”

Corn contacted Manchin’s office early Wednesday telling his press secretary that he had a time-sensitive story and wanted to make sure he had a good Manchin contact who could respond. Manchin’s press secretary asked the reporter to send it to her.

At around 10:30 a.m., Corn sent her an email outlining what he would be reporting. No response.

At noon he followed up. “I said we are going to post soon, will you be getting back to me,” Corn told Playbook. “And silence — crickets.”

We’ve known Corn for a long time and we trust him. We’ve known his scrupulous editor Clara Jeffery for even longer. (Full disclosure: One of us was her intern in 1997!) Corn and Mother Jones did not invent this. Manchin clearly told someone the account that Corn relayed in his piece.

The future of the expanded child tax credit remains unclear as negotiations continue
over the White House’s package of far-reaching social programs. Biden has signaled
that he will resist attaching work requirements to the program.

As the payments hit bank accounts in July, the benefit reached an estimated
60 million children in 39 million households across the country.

A team of researchers from Columbia University determined that the first round
lifted 3 million children out of poverty and that if all eligible children had access
to the payments, child poverty would be reduced by 40 percent.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that in West Virginia,
93 percent of children would benefit from a permanent expansion of the credit.

But even as the program’s benefits were registering in West Virginia, Manchin expressed
concern over what he saw as an overly lax social program available to too many.

Fortifying Manchin’s criticism was a recent study from the University of Chicago
finding roughly 1.5 million workers would quit the labor market under the Biden plan.

dubbed the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act,
which poured $2 trillion into America’s economy.

The flagship part of the bill, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), promised to cover
the cost of employee payroll of small businesses, at a time when the entire nation
was shutting down and unable to make ends meet.

Amazingly, some of the people who received the money responded,
less than a year later, by attempting to kill the very legislators who put
the program in place—the ones who kept their businesses afloat
and employees able to survive.

But the government is forgiving them anyway.

In a review of PPP data obtained from ProPublica, the Daily Dot discovered
many well-known Capitol insurrectionists have had their loans forgiven,
some being absolved of nearly a million dollars in funds.

Florida's Sarasota Memorial closed a clinic last week

The Fort Myers-based hospital chain announced its decision days
after Sarasota Memorial Health Care System closed its MAB clinic.

“Due to a nationwide shortage, Lee Health has exhausted its supply

in front of his house,” according to the Salem News.

“We should be in front of (Boston Mayor) Michelle Wu’s house,” said another person.

“Let’s burn her house down, too,” added another attendee who was using
the screen name Andrew Jackson, a nod to the country’s populist seventh
president.

The virtual mandate meeting fails to have a discussion - too much shouting for an hour.

Board Chairperson Frank Carbone was not at the meeting. Member William Alpine Jr.
tried to call the meeting to order and announced to attendees the vaccine mandate
would no longer be discussed that day.

“Amen,” an attendee named Nicole Coles said in an outburst. “It’s against our HIPAA
rights, and civil liberties. Our civil liberties and HIPAA rights.”

FFS! People commuting from the burbs and working in Boston, have been wearing
masks since 2019, and 2022 is a day away. People in Massachusetts had their Covid-19
shots, Delta shots, and right now, most have had their Omicron boosters, and people
are making an effort to get tested. (Breakthrough cases are a fact.)

Gov. Ron DeSantis likes to call this the “Free State of Florida.”

If he hasn’t yet wrapped himself in the Tenth Amendment or threatened secession,
it’s only because he’s been too busy playing soldiers, organizing his private battalion,
rewriting the past, and trying to destroy democracy.

DeSantis must long for those good old antebellum days when Southern states
banned expressing disapproval of slavery and made disseminating abolitionist
literature a felony.

White folks knew how to run a white folks’ country back then:
A piece in the Richmond Enquirer from 1856 exhorts schools to make sure
children learn that slavery “is the common, natural, rightful, and normal state
of society.”

DeSantis’ updated version insists children learn that America is an exceptional
nation founded on “universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence” —
“universal principles” that included slavery.

Here, in the “Free State of Florida,” DeSantis is happy to take federal money
while preaching distrust of the federal government*
