Hey guys, I know this is a little out of place but I'm hoping that sense this scene frequently involves leather, boots, and leather with zippers, some one could give me a hand with this.

I have a pair of Doc Martens, they were bought new, about 8 or 9 months ago. I wear them nearly every day, and I make sure to remove the laces, treat the leather, keep them dry, the soles well tended.

But here is my problem:

As you see, my zipper is becoming...unsewn. I've trolled teh interwebs looking for some advice on how to DIY repair them. I'm a fair hand with needles, but I have, in the past, self repaired it by stitching the teeth back down, and it didn't work very well at all. I am willing to go and get a new zipper put in, but this seems like a reoccurring problem.

Any advice?

Unfortunately zippers are like that. Some times they hold up for years, some times they break after a week, and usally there's not much you can do other than replace them.

I hate putting in zippers (this is one reason I favor ren clothes), and putting a new one in on a leather item, let alone shoes, forgetaboutit.

If it were me, and I loved the shoes as much as you seem to, I'd take them to a perfessional to have the zipper replaced. You can hand sew, whip stich, the teeth down, but as you have witnessed, that won't hold long.

You can try a heavier weight thread, and double up, that might let the mend hold longer. Also try some "fray check" or other fabric glue to help strengthen the mend

As long as it's functional, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Once the zipper was totally unfunctional, take them in.

I regularly take favorite boots and shoes to a cobbler (shoe repair guy) to have them fixed. They can replace zippers and heels easily, saving me lots of money and allowing my favorite shoes to last well over a decade. It costs a lot less than buying a new pair (a lot less) and, in my opinion, is money well spent.

I would go with professional zip replacement, preferrably steel, not plastic, as it wears better and longer as a rule.:rose:

Oh, absolutely take it to a pro that works on leather shoes and get a good quality metal zipper. That zipper looks rather unique anyway, cruising to have problems. If it were me, I'd replace both while you're at it. They aren't that old and the other zipper is bound to do the same thing.

Also, long zippers or any zipper that seems difficult to zip, you should put some sort of zipper lubricant on it. If a zipper has problems zipping, the teeth can actually be moved out of position, causing the zipper to forever hang at that spot. A lubricated zipper is a happy zipper. Ask the professional his/her opinion on what lubrication to use. And no, I don't suggest anal lube!

Bad thread! It looks like a fancy zipper, more fancy than function.

Trust me, paying to have it replaced is TOTALLY worth it .
