Robert M. Pirsig, whose philosophical novel "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" became a million-selling classic and cultural touchstone after more than 100 publishers turned it down, died Monday at age 88.

One of the more under-rated books. Doesn't make everybody's reading list. I thought he was on to something with the whole quality bit. I use his tip for shims out of pop or beer cans all the time.

Well yeah, that's literally in the book itself.

I had it assigned in high school -- a Catholic school, no less -- but not surprisingly found I got more out of it when I was older.
