Wondering how other Authors get in the mood or that mindset that allows the write the good stories that they do. I am in a bit of a bind beings that I have lots of ideas for stories to right but just can't seem to get in the right mood for writing. I know that if I don't get in the mood my writing will seem more like a chore then a pleasure.

Do you listen to music? If so, What kind..

Do you undress?

Do you watch a porno for ideas?

Tell me what you do to make your writing flow and feel good to write rather then being a chore. I love to write but just can't seem to get in the mood to write lately. Sure I can write emails but can't seem to get in the frame of mind to write. Any help or pointers would help. I really want to get out of this funk and back to writing.

You obviously do not have your idea, yet. :)

I think it helps to set up some triggers for your self- Pavlovian response is a mighty useful tool!
It might be a particular CD that gets you going- not that it has any erotic content at all, just that it's the CD you play when you start writing. Or a cherry popsicle. Or a particular perfume, or incense

One of mine, unfortunately, is fatigue- when my head is swimming and my fingers and lips are tingling, I write- very, very, well.
(guess how many hours I slept last night?)

I agree, but one needs a good idea first? No?

Sometimes masturbation helps. :)

Clear your desk. Light a scented candle. Agree with Stella_Omega re music as a trigger.

I agree with Charley. An idea, any idea, is a good place to start. I find it's easiest to write when a story idea just won't leave me alone.

Current Mood

I guess my not having my "own space" has limited my writing mood because I don't have a place to call my own right now. I have moved back home to Wyoming and until I can find a place of my own here I am living with parents for a little bit. That kind of puts a damper on my mood.

Current Story Idea

I have a current story idea and going a little deeper then the song lyrics to a Garth Brooks song did. Listing to ATB right now which is kind of helping but need something better. But I have to set my servers up and get my music back up and going.

Here is part of the song. See if you can guess which song I am going to do... If you read the underlying message you can imagine all sorts of scenarios.

"Til she came to me one evening
Hot cup of coffee and a smile
In a dress that I was certain
She hadn't worn in quite a while
There was a difference in her laughter
There was a softness in her eyes
And on the air there was a hunger
Even a boy could recognize"

Music. Lots and Lots of music.

The music really depends on what I'm writing--think of it as a sound track like when you watch a movie :D I try to choose music that matches the mood/genre that I'm going for. Sometimes I'll even choose a theme for individual characters :)

For my latest submission, Sirocco, I listened to a lot of Middle Eastern music, as well as music by Vas, (while not strictly Mid-east, it had the feel that I wanted for the piece...), since I was going for that "Arabian Nights" kinda flavor :)

Also, I like candles while I write and scents vary wildly from piece to piece too :D

Tea, candles to stare into, music. Maybe incense if hubby isn't having an asthma attack. And a pen and paper. I prefer composition books. All rough drafts go into the comp book first. The comp book goes into my grossly overweight "purse" (duffle bag, suitcase, wilderness survival pack ...) so that if a moment of inspiration hits me I can jot it down before my muse spurns me again. After all, you never know when you'll be in line somewhere and have the kinkiest thought pop into your head.

Ok. This is how I do it. I have a file full of story ideas. Some are crap, some are good. I thumb through them until I find an idea that I want to write.

Next, I put on some Clapton and start surfing the net. All the time, I'm thinking about how the story should go. Sometimes, I have to think about it for a while, weeks. On my second novel now and trying to decide when I should kill the main character. Already figured out how to do it.

Then, I put on head phones and surf Lit for a while, write for a while, lit, write, lit, write, change the music to BB King, lit, write... and so on.

Well, I need calm...not too many distractions...There can be something on the radio or TV, that I can ignore...It's just background noise...But not someone IMing or talking to me...And I have to have a way to keep myself from compulsively checking message boards for new posts that may have appeared in the last minute

Basically, for me, that means I write while at work when there is no traffic...

Start by typing out a rough draft? Literally a bullet point list of what's gonna happen. You might find it easier to get going when you have something written down already. As to the rest I think you can ritualise it a bit too much - just make yourself comfortable, have as much noise or peace as you can handle and just have a go. Won't know till you try.

One word of caution...some people work very well with outlines and some bomb miserably with them...For example, my muse seems to want to get a story on paper (or file as the case may be)...She doesn't particularly care what format it's in, just so long as the story is fully told from start to finish...So the times I've tried outlining a story before writing, I've found myself at a complete loss of motivation when it comes time to write...no inspiration because the story is told, if not well...so I've learned I have to keep story ideas to a couple sentence max until I get around to writing it...Any other cool thoughts have to stay locked in my memory (hopefully)...

That's a fair point, I'm actually the same way, which is why I only bullet point it to track where I'm going, otherwise I'm so worried about what's gonna happen next that I can't concentrate on the bit I'm on. It's just to keep things organised really, but can be a good way to force yourself to just get on with it...

HRM...
one of my best stories started off as a complete joke. i was just kidding around and the idea hit me that it could be fun to write something totally silly. it was and i love it still.

my point is that for some, its best to outline like deathlynx said... some can do bubble thoughts/cluster thoughts. everyone has a different method. use what works best for you but experiment until you find that method. me, i can't do anything regimented and its best when im alone with music playing. i have to just start writing with no conclusion in mind and just ...go. then i go back and do major fixes. but i think this works best for me...

Gives Credit where credit is due...That was Vermillion  I'm horrid with outlines... :cathappy:

Yeah - I'll always take credit :D
And my method varies... I've not really done outlines before, but now I'm doing a longer story and it's helping to bullet point it.

From one V to another, I keese you ;)

There is something to be said for a "Room of One's Own" as Virginia Woolf once said...

as I'm trying to write in the middle of the kids having a light-saber fight, while the two dogs fight over a rawhide treat and the cats chase each other in circles with Blue's Clues playing in the background.......

Yeah I do this too - I do experience the odd pang of guilt when I consider that i'm being paid to work, not write!! (but that soon passes ;) )

Its easier to write when kids aren't bugging me for food/drinks/cash/or indeed everything under the sun ...

I either write or I don't... I never try to force it, and I don't often try to suppress it... An idea hits me and away I go, time and circumstances permitting... The more you try to force it the worse it will get, you'll get a half cocked inspiration and wind up frustrated half way through a piece of writing when you can't finish it.

Sit back and relax, go about your day to day business... it will come to you eventually

Three things that I have done that tend to lead to an erotic story are...

Writing a story with someone via e-mail where we take turns describing the action after we've set up the scenario.

Thinking about a particular person that I find interesting and thinking about what I'd like to happen.

Just thinking about a particular scenario that I've always used to "enjoy" myself. Oddly enough, this tends to lead to a different story. I've only written two of my own personal fantasies into stories. They ended up in the Erotic Couplings category.

"That Summer". (Huge Garth fan.)

Sounds like a great idea to me. :rose:
