Have you ever written a story based on a dream you had?

Granted, I've had some pretty vivid dreams, but writing stories based on them has never been of interest to me. Anyone wanna share their input?

I don't know if they are dreams, but a majority of my stories are running in my mind as I wake up in the morning. Sometimes they are accompanied by images. Sometimes not.

I once had a dream where I was rolling a big donut and this snake wearing a vest...

Haha. Kidding. I think my dreams are too abstract or weird to be turned into stories. Most of my inspiration happens when I least expect it. I usually get the idea for a new dynamic between two characters and that's a springboard for a story.

I've turned a few day dreams into stories, but none from actual dreams I've had while sleeping.

I have written a couple of stories where I either changed the ending or added to it after waking. I don't remember if there were dreams as such involved but both time the endings seemed better to me.

Now day dreams are a whole other story.

I've had several stories that started out as dreams. I usually don't remember dreams, and when I do, it's only for a few minutes. If it's a good one, I'll try to force myself to run through every part I can remember, then write down everything I can about it. There's a window of about three minutes before they are gone, so I always lose some in the process.

It's always fun to see what my subconscious thinks about when I'm not paying attention. He can be as bad as the awake me sometimes.

Not written stories from dreams, but I have had fictional characters from stories turn up in dreams (while the story is still being written). That puts a layer of strange over my writing....

I've dreamed characters into existence that were so 'real' I ended up adopting and writing about them. I've also dreamed myself into roles that became stories.

My pen name came to me in a dream. :):rose:

I have this story where I lure a woman from her bed (next to her husband) and we have sex in her backyard

The issue I have is like many dreams is that they are fragments. One second in a breezeway. Then in her kitchen. Then on a bicycle

Yes, one of mine here was seeded by a dream. It only gave me one scene for the story, and it took me years to figure out the rest of it. Dreams tend to give me mood more than plot, and putting that mood into words is challenging.

Yes, I have that happen too.

Would be interesting to know if the sex was completed. I tend to get into the position and then it drags out to an irritating degree without carrying through before I wake.

The same thing with details. A few nights before, I had to show someone where my house was on a map in a dream. Getting down to that level of detail, I couldn't find the street on the map and even realized that the map didn't have a bypass road in it when the bypass road had been built in 1965.

In most cases (actually pretty much with most of the stories I write), I start waking up in the morning with some story element in mind and I work out more detail as I'm becoming increasingly conscious.

I haven't used a dream (I rarely remember those) but I have used nightmares.

My real life is always better than my dreams. I'm not reckless but I do play hunches, and they often create enjoyable events. I go with real, not make-believe.

In grad school larval psychologists constantly needed test subjects, and I made me available a lot. Such tests are expensive, and if its free its for me! So I learned much about me. Like, I'm a psychopath. My psychopathy test score is high. Plus my anxiety score almost doesn't exist at 1%. The dead score 0%. So I'm a psychopath with almost no inhibition. Fools rush in where wise men fear to tread, is my motto. I have no criminal history, so I'm not exactly a threat to anyone.

I use my fund of real stuff for my stories.

As a matter of fact, I have. Sometimes when I awaken, I can remember my dreams in great detail. One time after I had surgery, my doctor prescribed some pain pills which gave me really pretty goofy dreams. I could have written a couple books about them--they were somewhere between Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz.

The latest story I've written, based on one of my dreams, I titled, "Sleeping with the Competition."

As an undergrad, I worked full time and was a full-time student. With reading and research, it didn't leave much time for sleep, so I multitasked. I'd go over my term paper research notes before hitting the sack, and then I'd dream my essay. All that was left was to refine and type it. (And I did graduate cum laude). Haven't tried it with fiction, though.

Hi there K! My dreams are very often about experiences I've had so yeah, they have crossed over into some of my stories. I believe that you may have read a couple of them lol. I will post some of my old stuff on here and see how it goes, I haven't written anything new in a while though. Good to see you again!

A couple months ago, I moved into a new apartment--first time living on my own. My first week here, I dreamed about a man breaking in in the middle of the night. It ended up being a really hot dream, actually.

That one's definitely on my To Write list.

I dunno if a guy breaking into my house would end well for me dream or otherwise? 👠👠👠Kant someone would get fucked up and I'm through getting fucked...haha. I might look and dress like a woman, but I hit like a man:)

Hey, Unykorn!!! Long time no see. Great to see you again! I'm guessing a good friend of mine told you where to find me:) I figured you would fit in quite well here knowing you write stories as well:)

LOL
Remind me never to invade your home. I've never had a black eye, and I'd like to keep it that way.

I am a woman, and I hit like... well, I don't want to sound sexist, but I'm kind of weak n girly n stuff. That's why I keep a knife next to my bed.

Almost all of my stories are based on dreams. That said, my dreams don't always make sense and I weave reality into them to make the story read better. I do some of my best thinking while I dream. I once had a particularly vexing problem that I couldn't find a solution to. Many weeks later, woke up in the middle of the night, and said "that works. Hopefully I remember it tomorrow morning." Which I did and it was an elegant solution to the problem.

Alternatively, I've had two dreams that wrote themselves. I just needed to transcribe the dream when I woke up. One was 15 written pages (front and back) long, the other I've yet to write in the past 40 years.
