To those of you that value your privacy,- but either use pictures of yourself on your siglines or avatars, or use the same name in other sites unrelated to Lit,- do any of you ever google your names to see if posts from Lit are there on the web for everyone to see?

I'm thinking people who's jobs might depend on their NOT being found to visit a site such as Lit. And yes, there are some who's jobs would be affected. Don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise.
Or even people concealing their visits here from loved ones.

So long as you don't give your true name out on Lit for everyone to know. (A select few can be okay.) Or use the same account name on sites that also have your real name, you should be okay, as long as nobody from works stumbles across a post of yours. And even if they do, what were they doing on the site?

I only use my screen name for Lit and sites that are related to lit (other RP boards focused upon sex or of a deviant nature) but other things such as sports forums or betting forums i use another screen name. It just works out that way... Not sure if i'm really answering the question, but i wouldn't mind hearing the answer either.

I google mine regularly. I use a different name on each site I write on, and never a picture of myself.
I have this evening googled a few names here just to confirm or not confirm my thoughts on the topic, and one member I think should follow the link I provided them in a pm . I'm not meaning to alarm, but if something like taking down a picture or requesting a slight change in name is all it takes to protect your online activities, then I thought it was worth mentioning it.

One thing I have noticed that really shocks me is that some people I have met here use their real name on their IM. For more than one person I was able to google their name and within 30 seconds found them on Facebook with work and family info right there! If you have your real first and last name listed that means that anyone can find your home address in a matter of seconds. Please be careful people!!

qft... I've found quite a few ppl's facebook that way. Not that it matters, at this point i'm friends with them anyways, you just have to be careful. Might not be someone as nice as me.

Sally isn't my real name, and sallythescorpian is a user name I use for this site only. Yet, I have googled it, and found a load of the SPRs I've written. I think anything you do on the internet is out there, and for me at least, it is critical I keep my identity private. A handful of friends on the site know my real first name, but thats it, no one knows my full name, or anything I consider critical.

I've googled a few others, but I'm the only one that I find that comes up. I guess if I'd gone for a different user name it might have been better, but I think caution with real info is the key.

A tip from a business insider...

Don't use extremely intricate handle names for extra security.

What does that mean? Don't use xxxmidnightangelxxx as a handle. It's a pretty unique name that will hit quickly on a search engine. Phrases (like Light Ice) or common names without too many distinguishing characters, will not.

And where were you when I was picking my extremely unique handle????? I could have used that advice!!!!! Still, I shall bear it in mind if I ever set up another!!

It probably doesn't matter if your handle isn't in use elsewhere and doesn't connect with your real first/last name in any way. Which you say yours doesn't, so you should be in good shape.

SallytheScorpion is actually a pretty good one for two reasons.

First, the name Sally is extremely common. Second, Scorpion isn't that unique, either. Search engines key on words. The only thing I'd suggest is that next time you inserted a space between them so that the engine thought it was looking for a phrase.

thanks for the tip. unfortunately if you look at Scorpion part, I spelled my Scorpian (ie ian, rather than ion) as the the one with the correct spelling was gone!! Doing a quick google, I've found dozens of my rps, including several I'd be keen to forget.

On the plus side, even the email I had displayed on the site initially is one I set up specifically for the purposes of Lit, and I 've long since removed it, as it left me with about twenty "u spit r swallow babe?" type messages every day!!

Still, I have been really careful, even in stuff I've posted in the lounge threads etc, to keep my actual identity private. It's part of the promise I gave hubby, so that I'm allowed on the site!!

I googled my handle and found all my threads, Ausus being pretty fricken unique. That said all I could find was my threads and nothing else really. Which was fine with me. I had been using this handle on another site, but that's since been changed so it doesn't actually show up.

I googled that handle too. Only found it in one place, which is exactly where I expected it to be. Awesome.

And my first name is so unique that I can't use it in IM. So I don't. There are those who know it though, but it takes time for me to figure out if that person deserves it.

Yeah, I know about having a unique first name. Mine is so unique that I can be googled just from that, so I just don't tell people my name. Nods I should start making up a first name for people to call me.

wonders if *she* deserves to know Ausus' IM name......

You mean your name isn't Mr. Noon Shadow....

I picked a generic screen name for here and my real name is quite common so there is like a thousand people with the same name.

giggles I would say don't ruin it Noon, to us, you are Noon...it would just be weird if you asked us to call you...umm, Mervin...shrugs

If I did, though, would you eve do it? Ponders

And no, Noon isn't my real name.

EDIT:

Though, that woudl be a sufficiently weird first name...not google-able thought.

I wouldn't call you by your name even if you told me, to me, you'll always be Noon :)

Hmm...I don't know if I'm relieved or mildly disappointed. I googled myself and got nothing. Although, apparently, I'm a radio station.

(Okay, clicked the link to get more details. I'm not a radio station, I'm just a very old radio)

Funny :D

I just tried mine, and all I got was some links to people in foreign languages, which is funny since I came up with the user name Veroe off the top of my head just from some meaningless gibberish.

On a serious note. I've had one or two people I've met here give me their real first names via PM, and I don't want to disrespect the trust they've placed in giving me their name, but I really don't want to know.

We all wear masks here. I don't want the masquerade to be over yet.

Sure is an eye opener, thankfully if I Google me, government and development grants come up
Tried my name, and that surprised me, there is another with my name and surname, also here in South Africa, well, he can get the abuse :D

Google my lit name...you find lit stuff and that's it...

Google my real name....you find a facebook page...

dang it...
