Your personal, true life story, stolen from the BB. What would you do?

An interesting tidbit of a thought I had today......

A curiousity.

All these interesting stories of personal trauma, both physical and mental. Sexual peculiarities. Acts of God. Life, love and loss............ the surreal.

All these stories - by far and away I'm sure you'll agree - are true. I mean - some of them (and I like to say this about most of mine) "ya just can't make this shit up, it's too fucking weird."

So, with that said: What if you found "your story, a story you had related on this here BB, inside someone else's story?" You know elsewhere.

Plagiary? Nope, not really. Plagiary of an idea? The theft of an idea? Yep, I think so.

What would you think? HEY! THAT'S ME! THAT'S MY STORY, MY STORY!!!

I don't know what I could do - I would actually be a little flattered. And I don't think I'd have enough ego to "go after it," you know, say, "hey that's me man, you stole my story from the BB and I can prove it!" I don't think I'd do that.

What would you do? Anything?

I would probably sit back and be proud in away, I mean MY story good enough that someone has to take it to make an interesting read, right. I would try to get in touch with the author, and ask why he used my story over everyone elses.

Ya see.....

This thought crossed my mind because I was thinking I might steel some myself.

And..... when I thought hell - all of us are writer's or wanna-be writer's, just looking for ideas.....

And I thought of DCL - workin' as some sort of TV writer (I think that's what her does?) - well hell. Maybe he visits the board to wrestle ideas from it.

Make you wonder - how many of Letterman's and Leno's guys are here steelin' jokes from Trolls - and ME?????

Ya know? Ya throw it out there and you never know where it will land. And some guy gets a raise or bonus from your stupid, real life story.

Makes ya think. Don't it?

I'd be very, very surprised. :)

But after that, it would depend. If the story from my life ended up in a work of fiction, that would be flattering. I've never considered myself muse material, so to inspire someone's creative efforts would be an unexpected perk. Even if it was a story from my life that was painful. If the writer managed to turn something that was negative for me into something that was positive for those reading the work, then maybe all the pain (and resultant bitching) wasn't in vain.

If someone tried to pass off my experiences as their own, I'm not sure what I'd do. What could I possibly do to someone who's already so pathetic they need to live my life to feel important? :)

No, but I can pretty much gaurentee to you that something from this board will one day make it into a screenplay or play or teleplay or article or something. That's the nature of writing -- stealing. Not life stories, certainly. But specific incidents? Sure. Unique phrases? Yep. Points of view? Uh-huh. Interesting characters? A given.

All my stories have a kernel of true life history in them, whether it's a girl I knew, a moment I experienced, or perhaps just a sexy kiss that stayed with me for years. I take all those things and create my fiction and dramas.

So, no, I haven't taken anything from here (yet), and if I ever do none of you would truly recognize the story as your own.

BUT -- I do have some ideas on dramatizing the actual Bulletin Board dynamic and the voyeuristic addiction of the Internet themselves. I've seen people workshop "Bulletin Board" plays before. One girl brought a 20 minute "monolgue" into my theatre workshop one night, which was essentially a number of chat sessions which she'd copied onto her hard disk and printed out. She wanted to turn them into a play of some sort.

And how do you think "A Chorus Line" was written? The creator/director/choreographer spent a few weeks in a basement interviewing dancers. Some of those recroded sessions made it onto the stage -- verbatim (for which he got a lot of flack - the dancers, many of which were part of the original cast, wanted writing credits).

So, yeah, it could happen here. I'd never take anything verbatim (no more than three or four words), but, yep, one of you just might end up as the next Willy Loman.

THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME, SPARKY

Several months ago, I wrote part one of the story, "LESSON IN BIOLOGY". It is about an African-American female high school junior who is seduced by her older white tutorer. The story describes her as a high school cheerleader.
Ironically, I got e-mail from an African-American female. She explained that she was a high school junior and dating an older white guy. She even e-mailed a picture of herself to me and I was in shock. The girl even fit the description of the character of my story. The only difference between her and the story's character were their names.
Was this plagerism? Not quite. Simply coincedental.

Ah hah!

I love it when I ferrot out the truth of reality. The spoils reap the victors. DCL? Got you pegged, just like me.
