Okay, I definitely recall being able to store more than a hundred.. and I joined a while prior to 2006. 150 was the min, at least.. but I kinda recall it being 250, anyway mine is showing as 500 as well 
(not that it matters to me, I never once filled up my inbox since I've been here)

I sure did.. pretty tired though and couldn't think of any pictures that made me think WTF off hand, though now that I'm thinking about it again I do have a photo of a street sign that makes me chuckle.. I'll go dig it up.

Honestly, I rarely get PMs. When I do it's usually in response to one I sent first.. aside from the occassional compliment on my AVs (maybe one every six months or so).. but I'm also kind of OCD and keep it cleared out, you know, just in case my popularity suddenly rose or something

I believe the old total was 150 messages, both sent and received. I recall filling up the old box a few times with more received messages than sent.
I imagine the new total works the same way.

I have room for 500, too. Perhaps those "clean out your box" threads will go the way of the dinosaurs. (Mythological things of lore and legend, often talked about, but never to be seen again.)
Nope, the "clean your box" threads will be back eventually because the default is to save sent messages and I've never figured out a way to change it. Since people acually have to remember NOT to save sent messages, the sent messages will eventualy will take over the message allotment.

You have to change the check mark at the bottom of the page when you send a message, So it wont save.

Yes, I know that. The problem is that the default can't be changed to make you consciously choose to save a copy instead of having to take action to NOT save it.
You can also go in and delete the saved copy as soon as you realize you forgot to UN-check the option, but you still have to do something as opposed to not doing something or forgetting to do something and letting the sent messages take over your allotment.
