Tell me about it?
Why did you write it?
How old were you?
Do you still know were it is?
Is it any good?
Have you ever tried to rewrite it?

i've a lousy memory and have no idea when i wrote my first poem. so i've partially opted out of your questions and decided to show you my first two Litland poems (before that i don't recall writing any poetry).

Alive Response

i haven't re-written most of my submissions here, instead i prefer to use them as a 'measure'. i can look back and re-read the original form and see where i've improved and where i still need work.

i'm looking forward to reading everyone elses responses, cool idea for a thread!

:rose:

ooh we had a humble pie thread once to post our awful adolescent poetry.... first poem? goodness! way back...

something like this:

the frost comes and the flowers die
and that's what makes my mother cry
cold crisp winter air
diamond icicles everywhere

yadda yadda yadda

4th grade poetry book project. I know I wrote others, but I remember this one because my father still has it hanging up in his office

During the making of our class poetry book, Jimmy Temple cut the tip of his finger off with one of those paper cutters-- he grabbed it and ran to the bathroom. They sewed it back on. Poetry hurts.

The first poem I recieved recognition for was posted outside of the office on the glory board in the foyer.

I was in 2nd grade and 8 years old.

I don't have it anymore but I remember walking past it every day and feeling pretty good.

The Snowman

The smoke rises from the stone chimney
Coal black eyes peek inside
To see the kids who packed his shape
From snow falling down outside.

or something to that effect.

The first poems I remember writing were in high school creative writing class. The form poems were dreadful, but the free verse ones weren't too bad, at least by high school standards. I think.

I got a good grade in the class, and it certainly wasn't my fiction writing that earned it.

I remember naming it Angry Poet.

I wrote it because I was confused about a relationship, and it was causing me a lot of anger inside. I had written so many horrible things about myself, thinking it was all my fault that everything was falling apart. It was a rhyming poem but I didn't know anything about syllable counts back then. I was young and dumb.

Do I still know where it is? I believe I threw it out years later. That's not something I'd do now.

Is it any good? No. I'll give you the first few lines I remember.

I am the angry poet
always angry
and always know it.

I remember more but it's awful.

Have I tried to rewrite it? No. Ick!
