Do they REALLY do this ?
I always imagined that it was some kind of joke.

Another of God's little helpers.

Probably got somebody dressed up as the gimp in his closet and a fake wife to cover up his "little boy" habit.

And people wonder why the churches are getting emptier these days.

Probably because the congregation can no longer afford the gas.

Good point and I'm sure this asshat has moved with the times and has "online sermons" where you can send money as well.

MY wife is obsessed with Joel Olstein. She buys his books and gets his newsletters.

She's like, "He's so genuine, he's always smiling."

Course he is, she just spent another $20 on his crap:rolleyes:

Is it just an American thing, HP?

I figured that it was a world wide scam.

No. We Brits are generally much more disbelieving.

After all, if Henry VIII could make himself Head of the Church of England, why should we trust any church leader?

Our attitude to US preachers and the Bible Belt is WTF?

And a damned good attitude to have.

Sheesh! It's been around for just ever, too. My own father played in Amy Semple McPhearson's church band back in the 30's. Times were tough and it was a gig, yanno?

I believe you could trace it back to the Great Revival of the 1850's and '60's, much of which was a reaction to On the Origin of Species and The Descent of Man. Later in his life Darwin mused that it would have saved the world a lot of trouble if he'd titled the second book The Ascent of Man instead. He was probably right . . .

I can't help but think of the Steve Martin movie, "Leap of Faith."

At one point, Deborah Winger tells Liam Neeson, "All he (Steve Martin) does is sell a bunch of fairy tales to people who thank him for it."

I'm sure that's paraphrasing, but it's close enough.

Although, the movie had a heartwarming ending, unlike Roberston's ongoing crusade to amass a personal fortune and think he's God's voice. His shit's just gonna keep on rolling downhill, even after he's gone.

The churches are emptier becuz theyre infected with secular liberals.

Think about that Jimmy. It don't make no sense, why would a secularist be in church in the first place?

More likely better educated people get tired of the Pin Headed Angels, arguments and switch over to NCIS, or (shudder) O'Reily.

** Or the rantings of some 'extreme' politician (I have one in mind but I'll not name her for obvious reasons).
