Republicans Surrender Guns to Hear Cheney Speak

SANDY, Utah (Reuters) - Two dozen gun-carrying Republicans surrendered their loaded weapons on Saturday, complying with a security requirement so they could enter an arena where U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) was speaking.
``These are people who just want to defend themselves,'' Janalee Tobias, a member of Women Against Gun Control, told Reuters as 24 people with permits to carry concealed weapons surrendered 25 loaded guns.
The guns were stored in lockers outside the arena where Cheney addressed the Utah Republican Party state convention in Sandy, just south of Salt Lake City.
Cheney spoke to about 1,600 delegates for about 15 minutes.
The lockers were placed outside the arena as a compromise after gun rights advocates protested a Secret Service requirement that no weapons be allowed in the arena when the vice president was speaking. Secret Service officials said the requirement is standard whenever a president or vice president makes a public appearance.
About 35,000 to 40,000 people have concealed weapons permits in Utah, according to gun rights advocates.
``I like to carry (a weapon), but I understand security concerns about an assassination attempt,'' said one delegate, declining to give his name.
