The lie provided a false pretence used in hostile attacks.

Sidney Powell's assertion that the twice impeached ex president Trump's legal team was going to release a Kraken of evidence was also a lie. Perhaps she was signalling that fact by referring to the non existent evidence as a kraken.

Krakens are supposed to be majestic. A far more appropriate mythological metaphor would've been, "a Jackalope of evidence."

Answer: Because it fits in with their biases and worldview. It doesn't have to be true for them to believe in it so much that they'll storm the US capital building chanting for the hanging of their republican vice president that's been loyal and steadfast in support for Trump for the last 4 years.
