Exactly. Haven't you ever loved something so much that you'd kill people that have no relation to the problem at hand?

Everyone uses this as an example, Baby killers they call marines, no one ever seems to mention however that the vietnamese gave children bombs to walk into marine firebases. or the emotional trauma of seeing a child hug your buddies leg with a fucking hand grenade..
that oddly enough is never ever mentioned.

You dont think it ripped mens hearts out to see that shit?

please.

You didn't want to be traumatized you shouldn't of joined. They don't say war is Hell for no reason.

so b/c they were upset at the sight of seeing a friend blown up they could then go on justified killing sprees? don't be an idiot.

You asked if marines go on killing sprees...I just gave an example that they have in the past

Also, marines are taught to NEVER question authority...I have a problem with someone who can't think for him or herself

You do not question orders, as doing so on the battlefield can get your whole unit killed.

Thinking on your own is a valued commodity in the corps, being able to think quickly in battle situations is key.

Proper authority is key as well, because war is not chaotic violence but directed violence to achieve a goal. without someone in charge and ultimatley responsible, war would be true chaos.

the killing sprees you talk about are what? the raids against villages harboring or supplying enemy troops?

You obviously don't know the difference between a "killing spree", i.e. murder, and lawful actions during wartime, which is what it seems like you are incorrectly referring to.

Perhaps you just don't like the military in general, and would like to propose an alternate method for safeguarding the nation in times of peril.

For your information, Marines, and all other U.S. military personal are taught to follow all lawful orders. This means that if they were ordered to go on a "killing spree", i.e. some illegal act during combat, they would be legally bound to disobey those orders.

How is that brainwashing?
If I order mortar fire, to be laid down in such and such sector, and don't have time to explain the reason WHY.. should my mortarman sit there and debate the merits of doing such? NO!

So why didn't they disobey orders to kill an entire village in vietname...to quote the ny times

You killed women?
Women

Children?
Children.

And babies?
And babies

Question was posed by the journalist, answers by one of the marines who killed under orders men, women, children and babies. A prof of mine was in the marines in Vietnam as an officer and I've heard his stories and seen some of his pictures. The marines were turned into killing machines there. The incident above wasn't an isolated incident.

It might surprise you to know that I grew up in a military family and I am the first generation not to enlist in 4 generations. I took high marks on the asvab test and both the army and the marines wanted me for their intelligence corps.

I would argue that the us doesn't need a huge standing army b/c we haven't fought a war on our soil since 1865 when the civil war ended. We have friendly neighbors to the north and south, and are incredibly defensible by sheer virtue of the atlantic and pacific oceans. The best army would be a standing UN army to enforce international law, not the US going in and sticking our nose where it doesn't belong (vietnam was a colony rebelling against it's imperial master, france).

Actually everything he said is correct, although the distinction between directed chaos and true chaos is a little hazy to me, but I think I can agree with that, in principle.

Seems like you're the one that's brainwashed, but I'm not sure if it was a home job or you had help.

What if I object to our being in such and such a place in the first place and think it's an unjust mission. It's not like I can just leave the marines at any given time. Once you're in, you're in for at least 4 years and if 2 years in you don't want to be there, too bad.

my brainwashing comment is that you're sitting there spewing the military line. I know it well...I grew up hearing it.

I've given prolonged thought to why I think what I do, and I've had to go against a lot of what I brought up to think. Have you?
