You know, I'm getting pretty darned sick of the sound of gunfire

M1A1 Abrams is such a lovely addition to our little symphony

And here I was lamenting at my loss of the melodious tinkling of artillery. Every once in a while I'm forced to confront my own idiocy. Next week they'll stop shooting at every blade of grass that twitches and I'll go back to lamenting about my loss of the musical live fire interludes best accompanied by some of Wagner's more intense war pieces. Of course, the helicopters buzzing over help keep the "war zone" image alive at times. I did lay in a good supply of Wagner, though heavy metal and hard rock go just as well. Hey, you can even dance to it. "More human than human *boom*..." Gettin jiggy wit it.

Well, it's better than the airforce base we used to live near. The B1 pilots were just plain rude when they did flybys. You can't possibly see who is in the pool, nevermind whose female and naked, going that fast.

What sort of noise pollution do ya'll have to put up with pretty regularly? Could it make you move, even if you owned your house? How do you deal with it? Does it bother you, is it just part of life? Do you even really notice it outside of the visits to Miracle Ear?

Luckily I have nothing that compares to your situation. Every once in awhile the sewage treatment plant about 1.5 miles away gets noisy with a monotonously loud humming.

Well, we too have helicopter fly-overs. A freeway a few blocks away; a trauma center about a mile up the road; an area of Los Angeles at the border which is rife with gang activity. Some Saturday nights are just made for cranking up the Wagner.

The main source of noise pollution, though, is a house just across the street. There's an awful lot of activity involving teenage kids, fast cars, horns -- lots of horns -- and whooping and hollering at ungodly hours. One of the regular visitors has a motorcycle that is loud loud LOUD, and a mouth to match.

I don't wish harm to anyone, but I would love to see the bike in dry dock and the kid with his jaw wired shut. Just six weeks or so of quiet . . .

FT. Campbell, KY Home of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)...

has got so many damn helicopters. Blackhawks, Chinooks, Kiowas, and AH-6 "Little Birds". Every night the pilots go trianing, flying all over town and over the woods. I think I was just lucky enough to get a house under the main approach path. Fortunatly, we are far more dependant on helicopters the artillary, so I rarely hear that. But occasionally I can hear the machine-guns talking. Damn I love that.

Yeah, but they have lots of time on the ground to peruse the photos taken with their hi-res cameras if they choose to look closely later on. :)

You'd be surprised at the quality of images Imaging IR systems can produce and how far away they can tell who is wearing what.:p

I've lived on or near Airforce Bases since 1968. I don't even notice Jet noise anymore unless I'm on the phone and it's particularly loud.

hmmmmm......i CAUSE the noise pollution - Meatloaf full blast first thing in the morning (gotta wake up somehow and don't drink coffee) and shouting of obscenities at politicians on TV at regular intervals used to upset the neighbours. My partner solved it though - moved us to an acre block where the neighbours can't hear - :)

Would you like a nice pair of headphones so you can listen to some Zombie? J/K

The noises I deal with are doors slamming, people coming up and down stairs and the like.......soemtimes I get "entertained" by the neighbors.....but nothing like what you have to deal with KM. I used to have to hear the barrage of Howitzers and other like gunnery though, so I can appreciate what you hear and why it bugs the shit out of you. Does the word Apache and Hellfire mean anything to you? LOL.........

We live about 30 miles from Hartsfield Airport and when planes get backed up they fly over while in the holding pattern.

The only time you really notice it is in the evening, if you are sitting out on the deck, but it can get annoying.

No Big Gun Noise

Just constant C-5 military cargo jet traffic about 100 feet above the treetops. I don't hardly notice them, anymore.

*wincing* Damn, I hate that whining they do when taking off. But still, I would trade you in an instant. It's pretty quiet here. C-130's don't make much noise.

Andrews or Dover?

hummmm

does no one own a double wide?? just put awn the wheels en move awn out. :D

I live by train tracks, but most of the time it isn't too bad. Lots of helicopters, because I live right by a major highway undergoing construction so lots of accidents. Worst noise pollution is downstairs neighbors LOUD music. It sometimes shakes the pictures on the walls.

Gee, I get stuck with the Roommate from hell, who insists on entertaining company until 4-5 am, with the radio blaring, people tramping up and down the stairs to go to the bathroom (Which is next to my bedroom) and who tend to make rather loud "Whoop"ing noises while drunk as hell. Everynight.

Considering that I live in a city, I don't have too much noise here. But my first apartment was a block from the train tracks and right UNDER one of the busiest tourist stretches of Route 66. That June was deafening!

I live in the flight pattern of our local airport, on bad days the planes fly in and out really low, shaking the whole house. Also, about one and a hlf miles down the road is the shooting range for the area police departments, not so bad in the winter, but spring, summer and fall are pretty noisy.

In the morning, the sound of the geese on the lake is overwhelming. The ice cracks and sings from the shallow north end when the sun first hits it. Erie. I can hear the cattle as they call to each other, waiting impatiently for the sound of a pickup, which to them means morning feed. During the day, hunters punctuate the exciting moments of the chase and at night, the coyotes howl and I can hear the coal trains on the tracks from thirty miles away. Yes, it is so noisy. I can barely hear the snow melt.

Get the odd rumble from Gagetown when the 1-5-5's start working out.

As long as I can't hear the mortars I could care less. The sound of those things in the night gives me bad dreams.

The road to Saint John wends its way through the base. I was coming home from there one night when they fired a whole shitload of illumination rounds... training kicked in and I just about put the vehicle in the ditch. After that just sat there and watched. Arty impact flashes and illum are eeirily beautiful from a distance.

KM - let me get this straight?????????

Cause it just hit me........

You and the Studster (suffering from major Post-Traum) reside within major ear-shot of boom-boom!!!!!!

Is that correct?

What the fuck to the Studster's doctors say about that shit?

Sounds like perfect treatment. I can't believe it.

Oh yeah Sparks. Right next to the post that he went over there with. They still have the desert camo paint peeling off all their stuff too. Desert camo uniforms.

The doc hasn't said a word about it one way or the other. Anyway, we're ditching this place, moving in June so it's going to be a non-issue eventually. We'll be moving away from a mech post to reside near a nearly shut down light infantry post. Smart huh?

We took all the Stud's guns away from him. So he's only dangerous in close range.

Think I have to agree with Andra_Jenny about the noise pollution I experience:

The cats are usually the loudest each morning demanding their breakfast. Once outdoors the season pretty much defines the prevailing sounds. Last night there were some geese flying over about 1030PM. During the summer the cows are louder than even the neighbors lawnmower. Peak noise seems to be during the haying and harvest times.
