I spent much of yesterday reading. To this end I went to the library and brought home a pile of books by various authors.
Richard Matheson, master horror writer: I read 2 pages of his book before surrendering to boredom.
Joseph Conrad: I got about 10 pages into his book before giving it up.
Thomas Harris: I read 150 pages and made notes about why his writing works.
This morning I read several lesson plans created to discuss Stevie King's stories. Not one of them asked the pupils how King cobbles his stories together, to get the effects he gets. Thinking back, none of my teachers ever wanted to know what writers do that make their wares enjoyable.
