In the same vein, what topics or types of threads do you avoid or respond to only when there's nothing else around? If you had a most favorite, do you have a least favorite?

I'll talk about anything if there's something interesting being discussed.

Even the religious and political ones can get good because of the opposing views.

But I'll avoid the ones that are one guy hammering an issue that will never ever change their viewpoint.

The ones I'm most likely to avoid I don't see because the people who start them are on my ignore list.

This is one of those rare instances when I'm actually among the majority (the current vote is SIX for political threads, FIVE for all others). Political threads tend to depress the hell out of me.

It ain't the political threads per se that depress me.

It's the posters that default to 'Dalek mode'.

The ones whose posts can be deconstructed to, "We are the Daleks. We are the superior life form of the universe. You will obey the Daleks or you will be exterminated. Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!"

That gets kinda dull after a while.

Although those who go into 'Zod mode' are just as bad.

These are the people who basically say, "Why do you continue to say these things to me when you know that I will kill you for them?"

Do I sound paranoid? ;)

Who, Rob? Parnoid? Never crossed my mind. Honest.

Come to think of it, those folks sound a bit like some sports fans I know.

Literotica threads as in "The AH is much worse now than in the Good Old Days"-threads are my least favourites.

Not enough writing threads? Start some, and more importantly, put a little effort into maintaining them.

The "Guy with Tits" threads...
The "Guys getting pregnant" thread

I don't know... maybe a pattern emerging... maybe too soon to tell.

Sincerely,
ElSol

Yeah, the political threads tend to be nothing but frustration, not with any particular group, but with everyone who posts to them, including you, after a while. It's a lot of talking, then some talking, then some talking. Not much listening going on, at least not for the right reasons. And a lot of retoric and ass-patting.

I get drawn into one or another at times, and always regret it.

I've also come to learn that many of the writing threads are, in terms of my own use, unhelpful. Too many of them are things where we basically just talk about how we're writers. We already know we're writers, that's why we're here. *shrug* Maybe that one's just me.

Agreed, Liar. Completely. After all, you can only expect as much out of this forum as much as you're willing put into it; if you aren't contributing to the solution, stop bitching about the problem, eh?

Why is it you think that threads to diverge (or sink or go flakey) and lose their focus?

Is it just the nature of how the conversations present themselves -- the long threads with posts like beads, the earlier ones invisible from the end where most people first see it? Do people get tired of the seriousness and have to break it up? Is it too much effort to keep conversation going?

Or is it something else?

Endless threads, 'blurt' threads, most political threads, and any thread which is mostly about people saying "Hi! You're hot!" to each other. I can probably add most parody threads (unless I made them :D ).

I'd say threads eventually degenerate because people lose interest, the originator(s) go offline, or because there are a lot of posters with "the gift of gab" that can talk about anything, anywhere.

There are five to ten of those people hammering those points in every political thread that offers opposing viewpoints, however.

True, but case in point, Amicus's posts in his letter to Rumsfeld.

I loved Dr. Mabeuse's response and almost wanted to put it in my signature.

Hell, it made my husband want to register and start a thread called "An Open Letter to Russ Feingold" and he still might.

Sometimes you see links to stuff and see things you wouldn't have otherwise seen.

Like this:

http://fuckthestateoftheunion.com/

Some guys just put up huge targets and welcome all to take their shot.

Sometimes the shots are impressive even if the target is the side of a barn.

Any thread that starts with a link to a movie or animation.

My dial-up connection takes so long to load them that the point is lost by the time I get there - or I have got tired of playing solitaire while it loads.

I post according to mood.

I'm more likely to post in a political thread.

I am LEAST likely to open, let alone post in a thread that has the words 'incest' or 'anal' in the title. <shudder and ouch respectively>

I avoid political threads. They are just too political for me.

Which just makes me wonder about your politics, but I can handle not knowing. Now I know why you're so cheerful, though. ;) Politics can be negative. It doesn't scare me off, but I am highly politicized. Not everyone is.

Hon, I have my opinions...but so does everyone else and you know what they say about opinions, right?

Opinions are like assholes....everyone has one.
