He had first seen the two of them at the company Christmas party. She was dressed a bit plainly, but he could tell that she had a lot of potential. If she just took care of herself more, and had more resources, she'd be stunning. Her husband, just a number cruncher in his accounting department, was less remarkable. By all accounts he was decent at his job, but didn't seem to have any ambition, or backbone to stand up for himself. That was perfect.
He watched the two of them barely mingle at the party. The husband was clearly uncomfortable, and the wife was feeding off of that. They left well before the night was over.
After the new year, Calvin Roake, CEO of Roake Industries, hired an investigator to find out all he could about this woman. It took a couple months of digging, but finally, the folder on his desk had everything he needed to make her his.
A knock on his door brought him back to the moment. "Sir, Mr Hasherman is here to see you."
Calvin smiled. "Yes, send him in." The woman was a temp for the time being, his former secretary having gone on maternity leave. He wondered briefly if the baby was his, but then shrugged his shoulders. It wouldn't matter either way, she wasn't going to make an issue out of it. Then her husband would find out.
The short Mr Hasherman walked in. "David, welcome. Please, have a seat. Can I get you a drink?" His demeanor was welcoming and affable.
"I bet you're wondering why I called you here. I'm afraid I've had some trouble information come to my attention. In a regular audit of personnel information, it came to light that you recently got married." He paused and David nodded. "Yes sir, about a year ago. Our first anniversary is next week."
Calvin's grin widened. "First, let me say congratulations. I recall you arriving with a young woman at the Christmas party. I assume that was her." David nodded again.
"But no, that isn't the troubling part, obviously we aren't going to be upset if employees get married." He winked at the man sitting opposite him, on the other side of the large desk. "But the information does concern your wife. Our information shows she is originally from Japan." Calvin opened the folder. "Ah yes, and she entered the country shortly before the wedding. But this is where things get bad, David... It seems that some of the forms required weren't submitted, and some of the ones that were have some incorrect information. Like the nature of her visit, and the duration. Clearly you went through an agency to match the two of you, but these immigration matters are ultimately up to you... Without this process being done correctly, your wife is here illegally, and could be deported. Not to mention the fact that you've essentially committed perjury "
David was looking very nervous now.
"Calm down David, it's not the end of the world. As you know, matters of immigration can take some time, and cost a small fortune in some cases... Which I'm sure is why you went the route you did. I've done some asking around about you, David, and from everything I'm told, you're a good man. You get your work done, you're reliable, and you've never caused us problems. So I have a solution for you. We have the resources and the lawyers to fix this up for you. But I can't simply do that as things stand now. I can't just fix things for the wife of an employee. I have no legal standing. But for an employee, I definitely can. So here's my proposal. I just so happen to need a new secretary. You met April out there? She's just stepping in until I can find someone permanent. Which I'm willing to hire your wife to fill that position at which point we can start the process of fixing up all of your mistakes." Calvin smiled.
"You don't have to answer me right now, David. After all, I'm sure you want to talk it over with your wife first. I'll give you a week to decide if you want to take me up on my offer."
David thanked Calvin and left. He certainly did have a lot to think about. And talk to his wife about.
