As it happens, I wasn't talking about anyone at all. There are quite a few people hereabouts I can apply any and all of these words to, including myself, in the time I've been posting on the BB. In general, I haven't. Because I try not to call names.

You know why? Because name-calling is foolish. It kills any meaningful discussion and it invites exactly the same thing. Then your friends jump in and call that other person names, then their friends jump in and call you and your friends names until we're standing on either side of the thread calling each other names like a bunch of spoiled seven-year olds.

Here's the deal. People are always going to come here and talk out of their asses. It's a fact of life. Live with it. But leave them alone. The absolute worst they can do is call you names, and they don't know dick about you, so what does it matter, really? Not a damned thing.

People are going to be assholes, even people who have been here a while. So what? Will they be assholes every day. Nope..not even the biggest assholes here are assholes all the time. It's too tiring and no one's that creative.

You want to be blunt. That's cool. Be blunt to that asshole, and only to that asshole, preferably in a PM. If you want to talk topic, then do it. But leave out the juvenile "nyah-nyah" crap. Want to stir shit? Do it, but if you make it personal I, for one, will ignore you faster than than a fat man will jump on a Twinkie. I've put a half-dozen people on ignore this week, the first time I've ever done that, and they weren't all recent arrivals. That's a pure shame.

Laurel has worked hard to make this place so that we can come here, for whatever purposes, and call it home. We have taken it and made it ours, shit and all. And there's always going to be shit. It's a fact of life. Just don't add more shit to the pile.

That's all I ask. It's not too much.

Well now before we start going all goofy with our proclamations of love for *sniff* each other, I'll just say I agree with you, but unfortunately this place has no locks on the doors and any mentaly deficient goober with a computer can roll in and piss off as many people as he has the talent and/or malevolence for.

So consequently guys like me fly off the handle and bitch them out. I will continue to do this, but one thing I try not to do is calling names during intelligent thoughtful discussions. Of course I don't get involved in a whole lot of those, so that's sort of moot, I suppose.

On the other hand, some dogs just don't want to die, and need continual beating. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one point.

JMJ, Laurel is anti-censorship. If you care to look through the archives you'll find threads started by trolls calling her everything but pox-ridden giraffe. She does not delete these threads. What other place can you go where the webmasters leave criticism of themselves completely untouched and completely unedited?

I am a blunt, basely honest, agressive, bitchy person. I call it like I see it and I enjoy poking sticks into a troll's cage. I am not going to stop my favorite pastime because people don't like strife. I don't like dollies. I don't like signature lines with more than two lines. I don't like empty-headed flirting. I don't like threads with *hugs* just because. I rather hate Nessus' favorite line about love choosing you. I do not ask people to stop doing these things because I don't like it.

I made that mistake once. I asked people to stop posting in color because it affected me. The problem has been resolved on my end, so please don't feel the need to do it. I should never have done it and I regret doing it to this day. I realize this isn't a call to action on Laurel's part to censor. It is, however a call to action for people here to censor themselves. I regularly do that with what I don't consider appropriate for this board. However, I feel extremely free here and I revel in that feeling. I love that. I also accept that I'm not the only reveling in that freedom.

My point? If you can't handle the negative side that comes with the freedom that Laurel provides, then perhaps this isn't the board for you. I know of a few boards where the administrators make sure the trolls and negative people are never heard from. I'll be happy to PM you a list. However, I would suggest you make judicious use of the ignore function. It was designed specifically for this purpose.

All I'm saying is that just because we all have the freedom to be exclusionary, hostile, bitter, name-calling bastards doesn't mean that we should quite so often.

KM, you are, in fact, every thing you have said. When I first got here, I hated reading your posts because they were almost exclusively full of that stuff. But, on occasion, I got to see more - stuff that just kind of snuck out when you weren't suspecting, I suppose. What I read was that you are also a damned considerate person, given to insightful commentary, and possessed of a very underused (around here) but powerful affection. That it as important to me as the bitchy part of you. I"m willing to bet that it's important to other folks too. And in a world where you catch hell for damned near anything you do, it's nice to have a place here where that's not so prevalent.

I'm not calling for Laurel to censor us. I'm asking us to take responsible ownership of this board, to keep making it a place where you can go, not only to see a good ass-chewing, but also to be flighty, and to relax, and to debate, with a minimum of the fussin' and feudin' we get everywhere else. It's okay with me to poke sticks int he troll cage, but maybe not for a couple of weeks. I think a couple days is just fine. By then, there's a new troll coming 'round. If that doesn't happen, I'll make it my personal mission to give you something to poke me about.
