I think my poor truck blew an engine last night. I'm going down the road, and it suddenly lets loose with this God awful noise, and lost almost all it's power. I managed to get it home, but was never able to get above 25 mph.

I called a shop this morning, and got them to agree to look at it today. I tried to drive it over there, but it didn't even have the power to climb a very small hill on my road. So I called the shop and they had to come and tow it.

I think this one's going to be VERY expensive. I'm thinking new engine.

Being the type to look on the bright side of things, I'm starting to get excited about the prospect of a new engine. I'm thinking bigger cam, headers, performance chip, and all of that really cool, more power, guy stuff. :D

Tim the Tool Man Taylor would be proud of my lines of thought this morning. Somehow, I don't think my wife have the same frame of mind................................

You might consider getting a low mileage, late model engine out of a junkyard truck [low speed rollover preferred.] A bit more horsepower and torque at a lower price than your power dream.

If you really gotta' have the power dream, try thinking turbo and headers. With the turbo you can keep a stock cam. You will need a new engine chip.

Blown Head Gasket Maybe? Sudden loss of power and all.

Good luck.

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking rebuild what I have instead of going and getting another one.

I don't think it's a head gasket. Nothings leaking anywhere, there's no fluid in the oil, and there's no sound of compression leaks.

I'm thinking it's a cam/timing failure. It sounded like some valves were chattering. Lots of backfiring when it was running.

I'm already pricing headers and rebuild kits. :D

Momma ain't gonna be happy, but it won't be the first time I've been in the doghouse. ;)

What kind/size of engine are you talking about?

Sounds more like a broke valve or a collapsed lifter.... with it back firing, probably an exhaust valve....

Just the fact that it still running is a good sign, sounds like the bottom end is still intact....have you looked for any shavings in the oil?

I think a turbo sounds like a great idea....maybe a little NOX for those frisky moments...

V-8 magnum in a Dodge Dakota.

I do think the bottom of the engine is still intact. But if I've gotta pull the top half of it, I'll go ahead and do the bottom half too. There is the possibility of pistons hitting valves if the timing was out bad enough.

My condolences. I know you'll rebuild that POS. You love that thing. :D

It looks pretty bad from the picture in your AV, good luck.

My thought too TX... or a piston with a hole shot in it... or both from the same failure... backfire sure sounds like exhaust valve though... Look for a big flame out of the tail pipe with the backfire, that'll confirm exhaust valve... Depending on the speed when it blew and how far it's been driven like it will influence any bottom end damage... Like offset running damage to big ends and main bearings.

Edited to add: It could still be head gasket of course, blown between two cylinders would have a similar effect and not show up externally.

This woman knows me so well :rose:

Used mini van? That's sacrelidge. You can't 4 wheel in a mini van. You can't go muddin' in a mini van. I need a loud, poweful truck to pull my boat. :D

HOLY FUCKING HELLS.

Erin, is that you? Wait, no, you can't be my brother- you actually sent me a Christmas gift.

My brother's truck did the exact same thing yesterday- to the exact same type of truck.

Eerie.
