Took the bike out to do errands today. We hit a Mini Mall about ten miles away because it had a hardware store and a grocery store. We left at roughly 1000 and were having an absolute blast with the riding. We were nice and cool because I had pulled the shield.
After getting what we needed at the mini mall we were heading home when we decided to hit the local bookstore. Geesh we can spend time there. A cup of coffee and some browsing before we made our purchases and headed back out to the bike.
By this time it was something like 92° degrees out with high humidity. I pulled on my gear and was sweating by the time I had buckled my helmet. I fired up the bike and the wife climbed on and off we went. Once we were at speed we started cooling off again, we only over heated at the traffic lights.
Half a mile from our place I hit the turn signals. I like to hit them early so people know I'm going to be turning. I also tapped my brakes so people would know I was going to slow. I hate screaming into the turn out and riding the brakes. I was watching my mirrors as I started slowing and could see the Mustang coming up behind us. He was heavy on the hammer and wasn't going to slow. I ended up doing what I hate and cranked on the throttle until the turn out just to keep from getting my ass run over. As i peeled left he whipped by with his paw out the window giving me the one finger salute. I couldn't respond as I was grabbing the brakes and downshifting like mad.
As I came to the end of the turn out I realized I had a clear shot across the road and into the park. I dropped into second and leaned the bike hard and made the turn without a problem. I knew I had plenty of room to stop once in the park so I wasn't worried. Then halfway through the turn I saw the trench across the roadway and the two metal plates bridging it. Oh shit.
I had a choice. I could either lean the bike harder and hope to catch the inside plate at speed or I could stand the bike up and grab the brakes and hope to catch the outer plate. I did the latter, I threw myself to the right and stood the bike up while grabbing the brakes and trying to aim the bike. I hit that plate with my back tire sliding across it. Looking down for a second I could see just how deep that damned trench was.
I kept the bike upright and managed to stop at the sign although I left some rubber behind me.
After motoring the rest of the way home, parking the bike and changing my drawers I went over to the office to complaine as there had been no warning signs. The office was closed and I was leaving when I heard a loud crunch from the entrance. I ran over and started laughing. Here was the manager whose guys had been doing the work with his car stuck tires down in the trench. He had come in a bit hot and missed the steel plates.
Ahh well, no need for me to complain now.
