Yikes!

Amazing! I almost bought my kid those exact flip flops before she went on vacation, but we got them at Target instead. What a horrible thing that poor woman had to go through!

And yet another plug for Walmart...the wonder store...the number 1 perpetrator of the poverty level's OK kind of thinking. They pay minimum wage and treat their employees horribly...as this story demonstrates.

I never shop there I would rather pay the extra dollar. Every time I see their new TV commercial where they discuss the price of gas and how society needs Walmart now more than ever I could...well I could vomit.

Well said BB. I totally agree. They have terrible employment practices and we are starting to see them introduce them here in their UK Asda stores

Ack! I bought that same kind in a different color.

I don't think I should wear them. Still, what an awful story!

Here! Here! (They've tried to open up a couple in outlying parts of the bay area and people have successfully protested.) :catroar:

Looks like severe contact dermatitis that got infected, which is why she had antibiotics as well as steroids - I use hydrocortisone for my reactions. What a horrible experience for her. She and the other woman could be allergic to something in the plastic. I think there'd be more cases otherwise.
I have a lot of experience with this, remember: I am allergic to cobalt, latex, and nickel. The repeated wearings would increase the severity, as would the length of time without treatment. I've had it on my face, arms, calves, back, ankle, but never my feet. That must be difficult.
The clear margins are also a sign of contact dermatitis.

ETA: It is SO annoying. To watch a movie with a friend with your feet propped on a leather couch and pay for it with big patches of angry rash on the back of my calves for weeks just because at some point it was polished with mineral oil (that's the most likely explanation, anyway). To have to only get ONE kind of Band-aid. To have to study every new cosmetic or cream, and have brands dictated to you by the ones that list their ingredients and don't have mineral oil. Grr.

I have another story about walmart. I got my girls new bikes, and a week later A's peddle FELL OFF, while she was riding it. I was worried for awhile that she'd broke her elbow, cause she fell sideways, directly on it, but I think she just BADLY bruised it.

I don't go to WalMart. I hate the place. I go to Zellers, which is not the same thing at all. Also it WAS Canadian, and is not trying to put Zellers everywhere across the world. Last time I went was two years ago, for one thing, and I will not go again.

I hope you got it replaced or repaired. Poor A!

As we speak here there is a special on one of the Encore channels

"WalMart: The High Cost of Low Price

WalMart not only pays minimum wage to their employees, they don't give them enough hours in a week to earn medical insurance...and yes folks the law allows this to happen.

Not to disagree with anything here, but a whole heck of a lot of other places besides WalMart do this. Most convenient stores and grocery stores do as well. Even if you work 40 hours a week they can get away with not offering you benefits.

They are an especially egregious example though.
They are a huge HUGE corporation and as such get tax incentives all the time, whenever a walmart is built. I've worked for Target, and I know for a fact that Target makes more of an effort to make the working environment safe, pleasant, and acceptable for its domestic employees. The job isn't great, but the attitude isn't such that they are trying to squeeze every last cent directly from wages. You can just feel it when you go into a Walmart. I'm happy to say the ONLY thing I've ever gotten there was a garden nozzle we literally drove all over town looking for before going there.

Meanwhile, when a person working at Walmart has to go to the public hospital ER for any kind of care for their kids, guess who winds up paying? (taxpayer)

An unliveable minimum wage is essentially a corporate subsidy paid by taxpayers.
