Alaskan volcano Mount Redoubt has erupted five times shooting plumes of smoke and ash some 15 kilometers (50,000 feet) into the air forcing flight cancellations, officials said Monday. The Alaska Volcano Observatory said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the 3,100-meter (10,200-feet) high volcano located some 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of Anchorage, Alaska's most populous city. But Alaska Airlines canceled 19 flights out of the Anchorage International airport and residents of area towns were warned to be prepared for ash falling.

The Observatory has reported at least five powerful eruptions, including the first late Sunday. The National Weather Service issued an ash fall advisory for towns including Talkeetna and Willow, located 120 kilometers (75 miles) and 56 kilometers (35 miles) north of Anchorage respectively. "People in the areas of ash fall should seal windows and doors," protect electronics and minimize driving, the NWS advisory read.
Poor Alaska. Super-harsh winter and now this...

Poor Alaska. Super-harsh winter and now this...

Latest news report I read said that most of the heavy ash fell *close* to the volocano, and it was only light, fine ash that was making up the smoke plume which was not headed towards any really heavily populated areas.

All in all... it really could have been worse. Of course, the potential is still there for a pyroclastic eruption. But that possibility is slight.

told me that it was just like an eruption......same as the last time....

The good side

This should partially cancel out global warming.

Volcanic eruptions tend to cool the earth by putting lots of ash up high that blocks sunlight. The year after Krakatoa was known as 'the year without summer '.

WILLOW, Alaska –
Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano erupted six times, sending an ash plume more than 9 miles into the air in the volcano's first emissions in nearly 20 years.

Experienced the Mt. St. Helen's eruption and ash fall, bloody awful it was, used Panty Hose over carburator(back when cars had such things), flight was postponed for caribbean cruise, was escorting 50 guests, helluva time getting things straightened out...

wish those folks luck up there...

If nobody saw the news last week her poll numbers have gone up 10 points in Alaska since all the media twits crapped on her.
Somehow I don't think the voters in Alaska share the views of those around here.

Of course some have to take the low road and a cheap shot whenever possible.

So you liked her? You really, really liked her? ;)

For the latest info on Mt. Redoubt... because the USGS says it still has a damned good potential for a big eruption to come...

There was an article today about the Volcano Observatory. Seems that they posted a warning about the eruption Sunday night that prevented aircraft from trying to fly through the ash. Ironically enough, volcano monitoring was one of the items that Jindal spotlighted as pork in the stimulus bill. Full story is here:

wants to run for Governer of Alaska, but her GPA is way too high and she uses birth control (I was ever so glad to find that out!).
