So, my husband left me like 6 months ago. All and all Im groovy with that...it is just the events since that seem to have me in a funk...

I had to move...to another apartment I cant afford. So I have to have roomates. I have been searching for 2 months and finally found a couple that wants to move in that I think I can stand living with. One catch I am moving my bedroom. they will have the master bedroom and I will have the two smaller bedrooms that are connected as sort of a bedroom and a sitting room which is cool...

Anyway they are moving in this weekend so I thought I would take my day off to move my bedroom. I enlisted the help of my strong backed ex and got most everything of the big stuff moved. So then we went to hook up the PC and TV because I am completely an idiot when it comes to that stuff.

Everything is going fine...TV hooked up cable works YAY
Modem hooked up modem doesnt work...hmmm:confused:
We fuss with it for a bit and I finally call tech support and the guy tells me that when they rewired my apt they did not set up all the jacks to be internet compatible. That I will have to wait a week and pay a minimum of 80 bucks for them to put in a new jack...at which point I burst into tears...call me pathetic...I cant live without the net. So now my bedroom is half moved ...my PC is on my kitchen table near one of the jacks that does work for internet and I have no desire to finish doing anything...

it is just how I am..throw one wrench in the works and I am ready to call it a day...I just want to scream.

Now I have to see if my roomates will help cover the cost to get the new jack put in cause I sure as hell cant afford it. Did I mention my phone got shut off today because I have been so busy working I forgot to pay it...so I had to go to a pay phone to call them and work out that I will pay them tommorow...which will take all of my paycheck...Note: it is really fucking expensive to call Australia.

All in all I am having a pretty shitty day. It is pouring rain and I should have just stayed in bed watching movies. But NOOOOOO I had to go and get motivated...dammit.

WHINE...

Can't you get an extra long cord and stretch it to a jack that has internet compalities?

Kittie, as a suggestion, you might consider instead of getting the rewiring done for the modem, maybe you can just get a longer cord and run it from the phone jack to your modem. Granted, it won't look very nice, but depending on how much you need and how often you use the net, it's an alternative til you can save up to alter a different jack.

As far as calling Australia...try calling cards. I get some near me that are fairly cheap and they give me 90 minutes to New Zealand for $10. Trust me, after running my phone bill up over $700, t's a much better alternative. :)

We would need about 75 feet of cable to get it from the jack that has internet capabilities to the one in my room...I dont even know how much that costs... I will find out... I am just frustrated as hell right now. I feel compleatly incapable of handling life... Do you know I dont even have an allen wrench... I was informed of this today. I guess it is what you need to take my futon apart... Now mind you this was said to me by the man who took my bed and all our tools when he left.

I am still just learning how to do the dumbest things myself. For 8 years he handled everything and he still handles alot...ergo him coming today to do this stuff for me. I want to feel confident in my abilities to handle things and still I feel like an utter failure at life.

Kitte, it's hard at first. I used to call my ex to help me with everything. Now it's just when it comes to the heavy stuff. I remember the first time I found which fuse blew and changed it. It was a big boost to my confidence.

As far as that cable, you can get it at almost any store. Check in Walmart in the electronics department for not a whole lot of money. It'll be cheaper than having it rewired, that's for sure.

Just take a deep breath and remember...you can be stronger than you realize.

Kitte, I can so relate to your woes.

My life has been turned topsy turvy the last couple of weeks. Last night I was to a breaking point and just wanted to curl up in the fetal position and surrender. My houseguest bullied me out of it and kept me going, which was good. Today I received the kindest words from my friend Holden. I'll see if I can get him to post them for you too. They were very encouraging. Hang on. Each trial will make you stronger, it's true.

Thank you Cherry, Someplace, Silly, Cibo...

I think it is just one of those days I just spent 15 minutes crying because I couldnt find an extension cord.... I think I need a vacation.

I've never heard of a phone jack needing to be 'internet compatible'. Does this really happen???

Kitte, you can usually get a 100' cord at Walmart for $6-$10. It's not a permanent solution, and your connection won't be great, but it'd work until you can afford to have the jack fixed.

I know how hard it is to try and do things on your own, but the only way to figure it out is to do it. Get a basic, cheap tool set when you go to Walmart. Check out books at the library, sign up for classes at Home Depot or whatever you have near you. Educate yourself so you don't have to rely on others to do things for you. It's frustrating and difficult, but it's worth it in the long run.

Im sorry if I didnt make it clear..It isnt the phone..I have cable internet. I think I just need to grow the fuck up and stop whining... or eat a gallon of ice cream. The Home Depot thing sounds like a good idea and probably a lot more constructive then the ice cream.

You better share that ice cream. :)

Donkey in the well

Donkey in the Well

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried
piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway. It just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all
grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

Now, the Moral of the Story:
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to
getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.

Hope this helps to put everything in perspective.

Holden

Thanks Holden

Isn't he the best friend? Hope it helps you like it did me.

Kitte, there are a variety of possible solutions to your long cord problem. If you have access to an attic above you, go straight up the wall, through the ceiling and into the attic. Then run it through the attic to where you need it, then go down the wall there. Takes a little work but it's not as bad as it sounds.

If you are just running it around the inside of the home, buy little clips at Home Depot (the kind you can nail into the wall), or where ever, and tack the cord to the baseboard to keep it out of the way.

If you want to become a do it yourself home improvement expert real quick watch the variety of shows like This Old House, Hometime, etc. I've learned lots of really neat stuff from those shows.

Otherwise, relax. Moving stuff around is always a hassle, but like all other pain in the ass stuff, it will pass. Good luck... :)

Drilling holes in the ceiling is usually not allowed in apartments.

Kitte,
Got to Radio Shack and tell them you need a coaxial cable to run from an internet capable connection to your bedroom -- have specific numbers on how long it needs to be. They will be able to set you up with a cable that will reach. They may have to give you a couple of shorter lengths and splice connectors to reach 75 feet, or they may be willing to custom build a cable (attach connectors to a length of coax for you.)

When you measure the length you need, measure up the wall from a working connection to the ceiling; around the perimeter of the room (or straight across the room at right angles to the wall) to a point above the door to your bedroom/sitting room; down the wall to the top corner of the door above the hinge; through the door and down the door frame to the baseboard; around the room to the computer desk.

Keep any ceiling crossings to a right angle to the wall -- diagonally across the room might be shorter, but it's UGLY and will drive you and your roommates nuts every time you look at it.

Stay up at the ceiling level until you are past any doors/windows, then drop to the base board to get the cable out of sight.

Radio Shack can also supply you with cable "clamps" (they look like a lower case "N" with a nail through the upright) -- you'll need one for every foot of cable; it takes two for a tight corner and one every 18 inches or so on straight runs, so it averges out to about one clamp per foot.

The total cost could be almost as much as having the cable company string a new connection, but if there is a cable connection for the TV in the room I don't think they need to string a new cable -- they should just need to change the coupler outside on that cable to make it internet capable because there is no difference in the coax requirements for TV and internet connections.

What the cable co said to me was that it needed new wiring because internet runs at a different frequency:confused: and what we think we have decided to do is instead of getting my new roomies there own modem we are going to share it and run a T1 cable to my puter and theres with the modem inbetween... I think thats what my roomie said...I just dont get all the technical stuff but he said it would only cost about 30 bucks

Trust me, its probably less complicated than it seems.

P.S. You should know by now, we love it when you whine ;)

I seriously think the cable company is exagerating the need for a different type of coax -- if the outlet in your room is capable of digital cable, then it should work for internet access as well.

My daughter's apartment was built in the 80's -- before digital cable and cable modems -- and there was no change required to the basic coax routed through the walls to enable both digital cable and cable modem.

Installing a router and ethernet (t1) cable between the modem and the computers is probably a better option than two cable modems anyway.

Make sure you come to a specific agreement with your roommates on who pays how much of the cable bill -- one modem means one internet account.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!! Finally I have my puter back in my room! I am so happy! I can get back to perving in private. It is the little things that keep me going.
