Pet peeve: People don't know how to spell a word. They use it anyway, and follow the misspelling with (sp) or (sp?). Apparently it's assumed that it's okay as long as they admit they don't know how to spell it.

I fail to see the logic in that.

MJ (sp?)

Maybe it makes people feel not so stupid to admit they are not sure of the spelling. Are they at least using the words in the proper context(sp?):D

Wicked:kiss:

With the amount of dictionary websites online these days (I assume you're talking about BB submissions and the like, MG?) there's really no reason to misspell words - And it's fairly easy to spot the difference between a typo and a spelling error.

Learn it, love it, use it.

Raph, who can spell fairly well anyway.

Somewhat guilty, I guess. But I pride myself with a pretty decent english vocabulary so I only use it on really freakish words.

I also mistype regulary, and I can't often be enough arsed to correct a few typos. I think I said it in another thread some week or two ago: Really, what's the big deal? This is direct (or at least semi-direct) communication, and direct communication is about making oneself understood as swiftly as possible. And I won't let minor slips in grammar and glossary slow me down. Not many pepole pronounce words 100% correct. But that is suddenly ok?

If I write "I just came in from the barn, I smell like maneure." and the proper spelling is "manure", who did NOT understand what I meant?

Maneure is a new scent developed for its soothing qualities. It's target market are all the cattlemen who have lost entire herds to the, so-called, mad cow scare. :(

Ice-dude - You're not a native English speaker, this usually means two things.

1) You're excused.

and

2) You actually have a far superior grasp of the English language than most supposedly 'native' English speakers.

Don't stress it.

Raph, who does actually choose, pronounce and ennunciate his words very carefully when speaking :p

MG, I'm glad it's just a pet peeve, hate to think of you suffering for art.

I use the '(sp?)' occasionally due to laziness and pride, i.e., when writing in haste or passion, plus hate to think of anyone judging my spelling is all.

Deal with it.

Anyone who's second language includes the correct spelling and usage of the word 'arse' and it's conjugated form does not need to bother about spelling.

Kelley and Tracy, are you related to Laura and Lisa by any chance?

Hmmmm, after reading about their exploits on the boards and the frequent bashing of Lit authors, they may be our illegitimate step children!!! Are you "bashing" me? Hehe, I just read the comments in the thread about intimidation. ;)

To(Sp?) be perfectly honest, it doesn’t bother me to see a spelling error or typo(Sp?) in someone else’s post. I only point it out if it allows me to indulge in my base humour(Sp?) for puns.

If, however, I spot either misspelling(Sp?) or typographical imposture, I usually have a haemorrhage.

And, it happens so often, too(Sp?). :(

I couldn't bash anyone.

Sarcasm, occassional wit and piss taking are more my style.

And far far too much parochial subtlety.

Your response brings up a latent pet peeve of mine. How does one compose a sentence about homonyms? I think it is correct to say out loud "There are three two's in the English language," but when writing, which (to, too, two) does one use? Tap, tap, tap.

"Arsed" It's a damn good word. One of my absolute favourites(sp?).

I donn't knead no dammed spel sheker!

Seriously, Ice, being a Swede is a great Get-Out-Of-Jail-For-Free-card. Whenever you're unsure of how to spell a word, or how to use a word correctly in a particular phrase, you just point out that English IS your second language, and then people will forgive you for everything.

Or, in case that doesn't work, blame your hair color.
