Hi! Many of you may not know me, but I've been spending some time in Lit's "story ideas" and "editor's forum" as of late. I am here (because it seemed most appropriate) to say that my first story is finally submitted to Lit after months of writing and discussion with editors! I am sooooooooo excited!

I know it takes "a while" for submissions to go up (especially since I submitted mine as a "rich text" file), so I'm not here asking how long it takes. lol I'm here to let some people who visit "story ideas" know that I've finally done it!

There is one question that I have, though. If a story equals 7 pages on size 10 font on a word processor program how "long" is it at Lit? Is it still one Lit page? Does it jump to two?

Single spaced? Double? Sounds like it would definitely be more than one Lit page.

If you write in .RTF, you can use the "save as" to save it as a .TXT file before submitting. That might shorten the time it takes to get posted.

Good luck,
MG

When I wrote it out there were no spaces. I used TABS to indent my paragraphs like in books. So, the story is 7 full pages at a size 10 font.

I saved it as a .RTF file because I had some centered and italic font.

Thanks for the wish of luck. :)

I don't know if LIT has fixed this, but I found that when you tabbed in word and then tried to submit it, the text editor on lit removed all the tabbing. You'll notice that all the stories are formatted to have a space between paragraphs.

For example, the opening to my story "For Love of Snow White" has to look like this...

I know what you’ve heard. I’m the evil stepmother who wanted Snow White dead. You’ve been told that I’m some sort of witchy, bitchy, and vain creature. But I’m here to tell you that it’s all propaganda spread by my ex husband, the King. Those lies ruined my life, forced me into exile and make me wake at every sound in the night. My beauty, once famed throughout the land has faded with worry and fear. And for what? For the love of my stepdaughter, Snow White.

Most of what you’ve heard is untrue, so let me set the record straight. Snow White’s mother and father were the rulers of…well, I’d better not say. You might be a spy. We’ll say it’s a land to the east of here. Luckily the story has spread so far that no one can remember the country of origin. That is one of the few things that has….what? Oh, yes. The King and Queen. They lived in a time of peace and prosperity. The sea protected their little country on one side, and an impossible mountain range on the other, leaving the army with only two borders to guard, both friendly. They were quite happy, but for one concern. There was no heir. No child to rule when they were gone. And, as you know, lack of an heir can cause people to do crazy things.

Yes, I know Lit doesn't use TABS in stories or in the bulletin board.

I know that paragraphs look like this. (Provided I had more to say in each.) ;)

I have MS Works for my "main" word processor program and that's where I wrote my story. I also know that Lit doesn't accept stories in this form. Today I discovered that my computer also had a "word pad" (which is a .RTF file), so I converted my story to the pad. I also edited it to have Lit's paragraphs instead of TABed ones. :)

Congrats, Kenzi...

I have both word, and works...

I always end up submitting my storyies in MSWord as most sites are friendly to that, and not to MSWorks. Hopefully this site is too.

Lit Pages and Paper Pages

The best way to estimate the number of Lit pages a story will be is to do a word count using Word's file properties/statistics feature.

Depending on the shortness or length of the paragraphs, about 3500 words to a Lit page is about right, I think.

Congratulations! Having that first story posted is a great feeling.

Nice one kid, exciting isn't it, bet you'll be watching the scores for a week now, hehe!! it's fun love, enjoy it.
Don't get uptight if the resident shit head sends you a nasty feedback e-mail, he / she does it to most regardless of your story content.

lusti love, MS word and copy paste is quickest I find, forget techie stuff like centering, bold, and italics if you can work without it, this will cut posting time and lead to less cock up's.
The general Lit readership won't appreciate tech work anyway, just the sexual content, hehe!! bloody red necks.

Good luck you two, nice to see more new authors on the lists.

pops.......:D

Don't get excited or bummed out if the scores change either. My last story has had three votes and three scores...

So, my story was rejected...

The "reason" was that the format was not acceptable. Well, on the submission page Lit says .RTF ("rich text") files are acceptable.

I know I can copy/paste my story into the box provided on the submissions page, but I wanted my formatting the way it was. Even if "most readers of Lit don't care about formatting", I do. I used " * * * " (centered) to show scene changes, similar to published novel and story writers. Also, once in a while one word was italicized to put a special emphasis on it.

I really don't want to reformat my story as it is my "work of art". Is there anything else I can do? I don't have MS Word on my computer, so I cannot submit a .DOC file. I do, however, have Word Pad (which is a .RTF file). Now what?

P.S.

According to Lit's submission guide...

Lit's submission guidelines
There are two ways to submit your story. You may paste the text into the box below or you may upload a .txt, .rtf, or Word .doc file by scrolling down the page to the next form field. Please use only one method - do not put text in the box and submit a file as both may be lost.

It even says that .RTF and .DOC files will take longer for Lit to add than a plain text file because of the special formattings (such as italic text).

So, if Lit claims they will and do accept .RTF files, but mine was rejected, why?
