A young person is dead. *Brutally murdered in the spring of their youth.

*

The perpetrator*who had a history of violence and hate, is caught tried and found not guilty (for a large part, not because he didn't do it, but because the procecution didn't do their job).

*

Sound familiar?

*

The problem is, the young person wasn't Trayvon Martin, but was one of the more than 30 gay and lesbian people who were murdered last year.

*

"More murders motivated by anti-gay bias occurred last year than any year since the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs began collecting data in 1998, the national advocacy organization reported this week."

LINK

*

Don't get me wrong: It's not that my heart doesn't go out to that young, black person's family. It's also not that I think justice was within 6 blocks of that courtroom...

*

MY point is that there are DOZENS of posts on HuffPo, etc. expressing outrage, disgust, angst and fury over what happened to one young man.

Nary a damn one for the over 30 gays and lesbians who died in documented anti-gay hate motivated murders.

*

Excuse me if I think their "show of outrage and sorrow" is bullshit, miss directed or, at least, makes me wonder where their heads are at.

Take the politics elsewhere

Not to be all tinfoil-hatty, but the media very much does control what the majority of people "know" about the world. "Black teenager shot by non-black adult" is the kind of story that sells newspapers--or, more accurately, gets clicks and page views and therefore ad revenue. If people want to learn more about the world around them than what is spoon-fed via entertainment-type news, they have to dig for it. And most people are too lazy to do so. (Willful ignorance is one of my major rants, but I won't bore you with it today.)

Unfortunately, the people in charge at the media offices don't think "another dead gay person" is going to get clicks, page views, and ad revenue like "black teenager shot by non-black adult" does. So these types of crimes are not wildly publicized, and the controversy surrounding them is not constantly being stirred up in order to make more money, which means that the outrage just isn't there because nobody's stirring the pot.

Lest I sound heartless, I am very sorry for anyone who has a crime perpetrated against them, regardless of the reason. But I think the lack of outrage for less-publicized crimes is simply a matter of what happens when the People Who Matter are in constant service to the almighty dollar, while the rest of the populace is content to keep it that way because they've got food to eat, a recliner to kick back in, and a TV to watch, so what do they care?

Ok, so maybe I did rant a little....

I for one thank you for your rant.

If your LGBTQ don't expect justice or media coverage, it's not likely to happen. Most of us have not even heard of CeCe McDonald who's a black trans woman who has been unjustly prosecuted for the crime of protecting herself.

I think it basically boils down to two factors: visibility and numbers. How visible a minority group happens to be (especially in a literal sense like race or, to a lesser extent, disability) compels attention, but its the number of voices that determines how likely they are to be heard. Visibility generates attention, even if its negative, to an extent that a largely invisible group doesn't (and the social stigmata associated with being LGBTQ continues to ensure that many will choose to remain invisible). If sexual orientation was associated with some physical sign, it would get far more attention in society, whereas now people can still choose to ignore its existence unless it is deliberately put in their face. Until sexual orientation is as visible as skin colour it is unlikely to get as much attention. To me, this suggests a need for increased advocacy, especially by LGBTQ people in positions of power.

Yeah since there's no such thing as gay rapist or since the gay people never do anything wrong!
Please equal mean equal not special rights.
You want murders and attacks dealt with then the police don't clam up and stop demanding stuff, earn what you want like the rest of us.
You guys just got to marry and now the rate of gay divorce is sky rocketing too funny!
