Finally- a friend of mine who owns a small computer business came over lastnight with a new tower. He took the harddrives, video card, and CD burner from my old comp and put them all in my new comp. I now have a better processer, more memory, and everything mounted in my computer correctly- what? You mean, I WASN'T supposed to leave my old hard drive on the bottom of the computer, moving around like that? Yeah, he didn't think so either.

Anyway, I'm happy. My comp isn't going to crash because it's run out of memory, and I now have sound- woohoo!

Anyone want a gutted POS Compaq with 92 mb of memory?

*edited because I can't figure out proper sentence formation this early in the morning.

Details. Specs. Tell all? No, not how deep is your vagina! I mean your mean machine!

Pretty bad...I clicked on this hoping to see all the specs too. I'm such a nerd :(

Honestly, I wouldn't know about the specs- I'm really computer illiterate. It was amazing enough that I was able to put in a new hard drive and CD burner, as well as reformat my harddrive on my old computer.

And it's probably not that fast or has that much memory compared to computers that are now out, but compared to my old comp, it's A LOT faster.

I'm only running a Pentium II here and until two weeks ago, it only had 32 megs of RAM. Sure it's not super fast but it's extremely reliable compared to some of the newer systems the guys at school have. Eventually I'll end up building my own bad ass gamin system :D

Congrats lilminx - great news.

And good luck building your system, sabbathstorm.

Make sure you look after it properly: feed it spinach and broccoli and take it for a walk twice a day!

and

Clean out your temp files every week, defrag once a month and take backups.

You'll have hours of innocent fun.

Innocent fun? I think not, my friend. Ask anyone who knows me. ;)

ahahahhahahahaha...32 meg of RAM...???

Jeez, my vid cards got double that....
Seriously folks...the more ram (upto a point, depends on OS) the better, If you have the slots, fill em up, its the cheapest way to ekk out a bit more performance.

Windows 95/98/SE/ME...dont exceed 256 meg, Windows hates it
Windows 2000 Pro, fill her up, the more the better
Windows XP Home & Pro, same deal, the more you got, the better it goes.

Oh I know but being a student doesn't allow for a lot of cash for upgrading. Silly me, I like to eat once in a while ;)

Once a month for a defrag...?? I think NOT...try once a week for optimum performance....just after you do the disk cleanup and cookie removal.

LOL...Ebay is a good place to score some bargains:
Remember, the PC needs to eat too, and it likes nothing better than a few ram chips now and then....

I've been looking through eBay a lot for components. I did manage to get some RAM recently and am looking for more. The retail price has been fluctuating for months now.

I have to agree with Draco here, put your money in RAM more than anything, skimp on the monitor, software and processor, put the dough in RAM. You'll see the most marked improvement going that way.

yeah, its doing that here in NZ at the mo too.
The NZD is doing well against the greenback, but its pushing PC component prices up again. Glad I stocked up and got 512 meg of ram for $100 NZ when it was cheap. At one stage last year, it was $40 for 128 megs and $55 for 256 megs, cant beat that for value. Having access to wholesalers makes a diff too.

if you have a low memory system (under 128 megs) go to

www.outertech.com

and grab a copy of Cacheman 5.1. Install it at the default settings it recommends. A great prog that stops Windows sucking up all the available ram. I run it and I got ram to spare.

The Canadian dollar is shit right now. I was looking at $60 retail for a stick of 128 meg. I managed to get one off eBay for $47. I'm running at 160 megs now but I'm looking to add more.

Right now 512 megs is going for $221 not including shipping or taxes. That's at a discount dealer too!

You're most welcome Sabbath. Antoher good utility for cleaning out your system is System Mechanic by Iolo Systems. Unfortunately it is not a freebie like Cacheman. Its one programme I have never regretted buying. They have a 30 day trial version on their site. www.iolo.com

it features a Junk File Remover, Windows Start-Up Editor, Registry Cleaner, Dead link Remover and all sorts of other tools. And its reasonably priced. (PS, most crack sites have a keygen or serial for it...but you didn't hear that from me...LOL)

Hmmm I've got the rest of the day to ahem *research* some of those suggestions. Much appreciated!

No worries, hope that all helps:

I'm heading for bed now ( almost 2AM Kiwi time) If you have any more questions or need advice, dont hesitate to PM me.

Laters..

Draco......:D
