Bastard

I was dreaming. That seemed the only plausible explanation.
All around me was heat, too much heat, as though it might singe my skin.
"Bastard..."
A familiar voice, echoing in my head.
I tried to open my eyes, but they fought me. I tried to move my head, but that seemed in vain as well.
"Bastard..."
Again, the same voice, but there were others there too, in the background, further away, but still somewhat understandale.
Who was that? I wondered.
"Bastard, c'mon, B.C."
The voice was worried, but I wasn't sure why. And I also didn't understand why, if something was so wrong, anyone would have bothered me with it. I wasn't in charge of the mansion, or the school, or anything for that matter.
"Kane...answer, Kane..." The voice said, now near tears.
I took in a deep breath, found my lunge tickled at first, then burning with smoke.
I opened my eyes then, without choice it seemed, and raised my head, going into a coughing spell. AFter it subsided, I lay back down and look up to see Rogue, looking down at me with tears in her eyes, running down her cheeks. She was holding my head in her hands, which in turn rested on her lap. I look around at the lawn of the mansion and see several others, watching as flame leapt from the building's windows and doors.
"What happened?" I asked Rogue.
SHe sniffed, looking at the building. I could see the flames dancing in her eyes, reflecting in the tears on her cheeks.
"I don't know. There should have been an alarm. The entire building has an alarm system, all connected and run from the security panel. Everyone should have known before the fire could spread, but..."
I forced myself to sit up, wondering what could have caused the fire, and what could have caused the alarm system to fail.
"THey were all inside," she said, "All of them, and I did what I could...I pulled you and most of them out, but..."
I looked back to her.
"You can't do everything by yourself. You did good."
She shook her head and looked down, more tears spilling down her cheeks, her head slumping.
I stood, looking around to see who else had made it. I didn't see Wolverine, or Gambit, or Storm...or the Professor...
"Were they all...even the Prof?"
She nodded, not raising her head. She was outright crying now, sobbing.
I looked around again, kowing there was nothing I could say to make tings any better for her. She'd lost how many friends? All of them, perhaps?
I could see a few familiar faces, people I'd met since I came back here six months ago, when Rogue had takne me under her wings and helped me get started in the right direction.
I thought i saw Protea, and Razorback, and I couldn't miss Raja. The odd gothic guy was there too, but I couldn't remember his name...
I looked back to Rogue, who'd grown awkwardly silent. I kneeled down and placed an arm around her shoulders, but as soon as it touched, she leapt up, as if startled, and shoved me back. I was on my back, rolling away before i realized what had happened.
I climbed ot my feet, having had the wind knocked ut of me by the force of the throw, and looked back at her, confused.
"No," she said, almsot shouted, "I can't...I..."
She shook her head, violently, then took in a deep breath and seemed to gain some control.
"Rogue..." I began, but she didn't give me time to finish.
"I have to leave, Kane. I'm sorry, but I must go...I can't...I can't stay here any longer..."
With that she leapt into the air and was heading away at full speed.
I watche dher go, her form shrinking into a speck against the night sky, then gone within a few minutes.
I turned to the others then, realizing that we were truly all alone then, no X-Men around, or possibly even alive to help us. Mutants in a world that hated them, forced to face it without help.
"Is anybody hurt?" I ask. "Is everybody okay?"

Mallory (Rain)

I can´t believe it... the mansion... everything.. burned, and the X-men, the professor, what the hell happened here?

I could not remember much but being woken by Roge and running among flames, then I lost conciousnes, and when I woke up I was here, in the lawn in front of the mansion ( or what was left of it).

Just when I had found a place where I thought I could call home, where I could learn how to control my powers and channel them in a appropiae way, where maybe I could make true friends. Now that dream was gone... Who could have done this, who could have the power to achieve this destruction? I look around at the rest of the survivors, they all look confused.

Suddenly Rogue, who was talking to Kane, flew away full speed. Now we were alone... This was not good, I hardly knew anyone here, I had just arrived 1 week ago...

I kneel in the floor and watch as the flames finish to consume the rest of the building...

There's nothing like hanging upside down three hundred feet in the air with only a single length of webbing to keep you from certain death. It's a rush, better than any drug or extreme sport out there. Spiderman couldn't get enough of it. At times he would spend hours up here, just dangling, sometimes letting the wind rock him gently back and forth.
Somewhere, on the horizon, he saw a small pillar of black smoke. With a pointed interest, he righted himself, trying to examine it some more.
"College bonfire?"
No, there was no colleges out there. In fact, there wasn't much of anything out there, except a couple of mansions. Had the Harding's house gone up in flames again? Didn't look like a problem for Spiderman, more like a problem for the fire department and an insurance company. The way Felicia's family was, he wouldn't doubt if they claimed the real Mona Lisa was in there.
No, wait, the Harding house wasn't over there, it was more North. In fact, most of the rich houses swere more towards the north. The only thing that was west was...
"Oh my god!"
In a flash of web he was gone. Like lightening, arching from building to building. Grabbing the web, rocketing his entire body forward, before momentarily flying in the air. Weightless against the city's backdrop. Another string of web came out, catching him from near death as he once again shot towards his destination.
At times this was the only therpeutic thing he had, besides the dangling. Now, however, it wasn't. It was simply a means of transportation, faster than any means without actually flying.
In no time buildings gave way to tall trees. He had to shorten his distances greatly, but was pleased by it. This meant the mansion was close.
The black smoke rose into the night sky, disappearing betwixt the two. Spiderman finally shot himself into the clearing, dropping several feet before the burning building.
Bodies everywhere.
They were all alive though. He could see a bunch of students taking care of each other. The building itself looked destroyed. Only held together by the fire now consuming it. Spiderman glanced from spot to spot, nothing, not even enough left if something was in there to save.
He dropped the current web cartidges in his shooters, grabbing some of his special variety that had extra water in it. The different types of webbing he had was uncanny. With that, he put in on wide spray, shooting it everywhere.
The fire itself was impossible to stop, but he took as much as he could out. Making sure that it only burned the house, and by daybreak it would be nothing but a smoldering pile.
Things began to crash, Spiderman winced, keeping up the spray. The fire was hot, very hot. He sweated profusely in his suit.
Tights... always tights.
Feeling that he had done the best he could, Spiderman stopped, glancing back at the other mutant students.
Something came to him, why didn't Storm just make a little rainstorm to stop this? In fact, there were tons of mutants with powers to stop this, Gambit, Beast, hell, even Wolverine could have grabbed a fire extinguisher.
Was it a bomb or something?
There was questions that needed to needed to be answered here.
"All right," he stood before them, "Can I speak to the Professor of the house?"

Bastard

Things were out of hand. Oddly, seemingly out of nowhere, Wild Card showed up. I never did like that one. Too...I wasn't sure what, but he irked me, somehow. Then, to my relief, given the lack of other experienced mutants there, Spiderman arrived.
"Can i speak to the Professor of the house?" He asked.
Not a question that had a kind answer.
"I don't think so," I replied. "I really don't."
I pointed to the fire, shaking my head slowly.
"Not many of us got out, and those that did owe Rogue our lives," I said, realizing as I spoke the words that Rogue may very well be the only one I would refer to in that manner. She'd gained my respect over the past six months, in a way even the Professor hadn't, and, looking at the flames leaping out of the skeletal structure of the building, I guessed he never would. Not now.
A mutant came running up to us, looking in a bit of a panic.
"Hey, that Wild Card guy just went underground," he said. Then he ripped the sleeve off some other poor student's shirt and covered his nose and mouth. THe student just stared at him, still in shock over the tragedy before her. "I'm going after him," the mutant added.
"No, wait, you--" I tried to warn against it. If Rogue couldn't save them, how could we? She knew the mansion better than any of us did. But he was gone, heading toward some kind of opening leading underground, smoke pouring out like it were the top of a chimney.
I turned to Spiderman, shaking my head.
"I doubt we can be of any help. I just hope they don't get themselves killed. The least I can do is see if everybody's okay. Hopefully, we can get out of town before people realize what's happened. We'll be targets if they know the Prof and other aren't here to protect...well, them." I pointed to the other then, not ready to admit I was feeling vulnerable yet, if I would admit it at all, ever.
I hurried over to the first person I saw, a girl, kneeling down, watching the flame. As I got closer, i could see it was Mallory, although she went by Rain. A pretty name, I thought, but had never told her.
"Rain," I began, "Are you alright?"

Mallory (Rain)

I was still kneeling, thinking (or trying to) on what had just happened when I heard a voice... " Rain "... it was talking to me...

I turn my head and find Kane staring at me, calling my name asking if I am ok... ok? no Im not, I dont know how I am, I dont know how am I still alive.

I also notice Spiderman standing among the small group of survivors, what is he doing here? might he know something about the tragedy that just happened?

I shake my head with all these thoughts...

" Well, yes I guess I am alright, at least I am not hurt, just a little confused ".

Just then the guy who had gone inside the burning mansion came carrying the bodies of Wolverine and Gambit, and someone else carried Storms still breathing body. That was too much for me, I feel tears building up in my eyes, I cant stand this anymore, I bury my head in my hands and start crying...

Night Walker

I watch stunned as the mantchin burns. I was out in the surrounding woods exploring in my panther form getting used to moving on four lags and being able to clime trees and controlling the animal egis to kill. I came running back as soon as I smelt the smoke from the fire.I ran to the manchin as fast as I could but Bye the time I got to the manchin it was all reedy burning out of control.

I see Rogue bringing the last of the survivors out of the inferno. I start tords her as she cradils one of them in her lap but before I get to her she takes of in to the night. I watch as she fly away. I frown thinking that it was too bad my ravine form wasn’t fast info for me to catch up to her.

I tern back to the blaze seeing two guy’s going in to the basement. I whoch the door and I move over to them as they bring Gambit Wolverine and Storm out. I neal between gambit and storm knowing that Wolverine would be fine given enough time. I retch in to my pocket poling out my cell calling 911 I give them the address saying hery there are two that need an anbilc now that I now of. I look up at the rest of the survivors thinking that I rely need to get over my shyness even thaw I’ve been her a wile I still don’t now any of them by name only by there face.

Bastard

She started to cry, and I stood there, watching, not knowing what to do about it. They were gone, and that she was reacting at all seemed a good sign. Many hadn't said a word or even moved.
And what had she said? Well, yes, I guess I'm alright, at least I am not hurt, just a little confused. Didn't that hit the nail on the head? Exactly how I was feeling...except she hadn't said "lost."
That was the key to it, I thought. Lost, without anywhere to go and anyone who'd accept us if we went there.
I looked back to the flames, watching the skeletal frame at the back of the house collapse inward, sending the flames bursting up suddenly, and making a loud crashing sound.
The entire structure was going to fall, right there, before the fire department even came close to arriving. If they were coming at all. And by now, they had to know there was a fire, whether we'd calle dthem or not.
"Let's go," I shouted, "Everybody get further back incase it collapses more."
I looked down to Rain, who sat crying, then decided to be more tender than usual, if I could manage that (tender wasn't my forte). I reached down, placing a hand on her shouler.
"Rain," I began, trying to speak softly. "We've got to get further back. It's not safe here."

As they load the three into the ambulance, I can see the disgust on the faces of the Medics, looking over those one the lawn, and especially the three they were about to take to the hospital.
I caught Wild Card by the arm as he climbed into the back of one ambulance with Storm.
"Hey," I whispered, "Don't let them stay at the hospital any longer than necessary. They'd be better takne care of by their own. Take them to the LeBeau Institute...as soon as they're well enough to be moved that far."
That said, I let him o and walked back over to Rain.

Not alone? Who was he kidding? The other schools aren't the X-Men Academy, not even close. The Professor's tuteledge was the only thing that had ever really...touched me, reached within me and made me feel more at peace with myself. As I reached Rain, intending to try and comfort her, though i had no knowledge of how to do so. My actions had a tendency of making people less comfortable, not more.
Before I could say anything, one of the others was there.
"What do we do now? Where can we stay for the night?" He asked. I didn't know what his name was, only that he was one of the ones I'd seen here and there.
"I don't know. I guess we should camp out in the woods over here, then decide what to do in the morning. Besides, I doubt any of us will get much sleep anyway."
I looked between he and Rain, then added. "I think I'm blowing town in the morning. This place'll just feel like a graveyard..."

OOC: Sorry it took a few days for me to post, I usually don't check the board too much on the weekends.

Adrenaline pumped through Anthony's body today. As soon as he began to feel his skin tingle he ran to a secluded spot far away from the mansion. He had only been at the school for two weeks now, so he still didn't have any control of the hard plates that protruded from his skin when he got excited. In the distance he could see the lights from the ambulance and fire trucks peeking through the thick smoke.

"How did this fire start anyways? Was anyone hurt?" Anthony suddenly realized he didn't tell anyone he was O.K., he had to calm himself first using the meditation techniques that the professor and Mr. Logan had taught him. Anthony sat on the ground and crossed his legs. He swallowed a deep breath of air and began to feel the stress leaving his body. His mind was in a dreamstate between sleep and awake, he felt sedated and thrilled at the same time. He began to imagine himself flying over the trees, stretching towards the sky.

Anthony now had to prepare himself for returning to an awake state. Anthony imagined himself floating back to the ground and began slowley moving his limbs. After a few minutes he opened his eyes and his plates folded back into his skin. Anthony got up and headed toward the group to tell someone he was OK

Johnny Blaze, AKA Lightwave, awoke in circumstances he could never have imagined. He was floating in the midst of flames roaring from within a burning building. Somehow in his sleep he had transformed into pure light, protecting him from being harmed by the fire. As flames licked through his floating form he realised where he was... OH SHIT! The academy!
Lightwave sped down to the ground faster than the eye could see and approached a group of students, a thousand questions filling his mind. Scenes of destruction met his eyes from every direction. Here were three of the original X Men being loaded into an ambulance, There was Mallory crying, even Spiderman was there. At least a small group of mutants were being practical, trying to figure out a place to sleep.
Too shocked to be afriad or upset, Lightwave approached them. Settling back into his human form, he decided against asking questions. Instead he said: "I can probably travel faster than anyone here. Do you think I should send for help? But If I do who can I go to? Who wants to help mutants? But I have to do something. Where's the Prof?"

Mallory (Rain)

An ambulance arrived and took the bodies of the 3 X-Men, what a sad sight, there lay 3 of the greatest mutants... How could they die and we rookies are alive... this was surely intended, someone was oviously targeting the X-men group... and that someone was going to pay...

Some of the survivors were already talking about leaving town, not me, I had to find who did this, one way or another, most probably I will get killed in the process, but then again, I have nothing or noone else, my last hope for a family was destroyed, the last hope for a home... oh yes, someone is going to pay...

The I heard Kane trying to make me get back from the fire... I stand up and without saying a word step back and sit laying against a tree, we were surely going to spend the night here...

I appreciate Kanes attitude towards me, he hardly knows me, and yet he tries to act tender, caring, I smile at him and stop crying, theres no time for that, all my energy is going to be focused on one objective...

Aenas Duplaix in "The Inferno"

As I climbed out of the burning wreckage that was once the only place I called home, I realized either I was the first one out or one. Crawling over to the woods, I refused to let the others see me this way. With my blood staining the grass I made my way as far from the grounds as my body could pull me. Lying in heap and trying to just breathe I assessed my injuries. For sure my ribs were at least broken or bruised or I simply bruised my sternum because breathing is not a voluntary action right now and it should be. Checking my head I had a nice sized gash and judging by the fact that room is spinning and I everything is in triplicate, I have at least a mild concussion from the blast.

Watching the others make thier way out slowly I tried to get back to my feet. Realizing that with my concussion this was going to be an easy task instead I focused my powers like the Professor spent hours showing me two days. Focusing more than I ever had before, I concentrated on making myself hover slightly. This was a difficult task because in order to achieve this goal with my powers I have to use them inversely. In other words instead of using my kenetic engery powers outwardly I manipulated the energy I was drawing from the fire inwardly lifting myself off the ground. HMM not bad for a novice.

Hovering back to the others I watching in horror as our teachers were being hauled from the wreckage that was once a home to us all. Watching as they dragged out the X-Men from the inferno, I nearly lost control when I saw Storm come out in the shape she was in. While the others remained in shock or tried to help in the rescue I flew over to the woman that recruited me and accepted me into this bunch before anyone else did and tried my best help her. Admistering CPR I hoped with all my heart that Ororo would live. As I breathed into her lungs I hoped with every chest compression or mouth to mouth she would awaken, but it was not happening. While she saw still breathing everything I tried to do to revive her did not work.

Suddenly the sounds off sirens began and the EMT came to collect my fallen mentors. I held Storms hand even as they loaded her into the ambulance. I wanted to cry but my pride would not allow me to show my teamates that side of me.

As they loaded Ororo, Wolverine and Gambit in the ambulance I saw the look of disgust on the paramedics face and knew exactly what he was thinking. I am pretty sure it was along the lines of "Stinking mutie. I just wish all of them burned in hell."

With that though flooding my mind I retreated into the darkness of the trees. I knew I was not stable enough to face everyone like this. I refused to let those EMTs touch me, I am too proud to be carted off to doctor to tell me what I already know. Plus I did not want the others to feel anything to me. After all I am a Duplaix and we are not allowed to show emotion or weakness in front of others.

"I hate to dissapoint you," he said, staring at all the young faces. Man, were the rookies the only ones to survive? He was barely 22 and it looked like he was the oldest person here, "But the firefighters aren't coming. They know this was the X-Men mansion, and they would like to see it burn down as do most of the human population out there. Your lucky the paramedics even came."
It seemed so diheartening to say, especially to all these young kids. He didn't want to get their hopes up though, human kind wasn't going to help them. But...
The wail of sirens was heard from far away, it was obvious that this wasn't the firemen, but the police. He didn't doubt if they would be prejudice about this either. Hell, they would probably try to arrest him just for being here.
"Listen, I'm going to go keep and eye on the Wolverine and the others, make sure nothing happens at the hospital. I'm not sure what you are all going to do, but please don't stay. I know you're all innocent, but the police are simply going to see a bunch of mutants in front of a fire. If you have somewhere to go, then please go there."
He waited for any other comments, and then was off in a spurt of web. He lingered at the edge of the forest, shooting pictures of the fire, something for Jameson so he could keep his job, and then was off once more. After he cleared the forest, he could easily catch up to the ambulance and follow it to the hospital.
There, he clung outside of the window, watching doctors and nurses try to cure them. It was painfully obvious they weren't sure what to do.
After all, mutant care isn't in the handbook, you know.
Spiderman just kept an eye, watching to see that no one tried to 'accidentally' give a lethal dose of something or other.

Rain moved back, leanign on a tree, and I looked around, wondering what would possibly become of this.
Spiderman spoke up then.
"I hate to disappoint you but the firefighters aren't coming. They know this was the X-Men mansion and they would like to see it burn down as do most of the human population out there. you're lucky the paramedics even came."
That bore the ring of truth to it, and another part of my heart sank. It seemed lik eall of it would hit rock bottom before the night was over, if it took that long.
Those words would stick with me though, long after the night passed, though i didn't know it. Nor did I know that the rest of the words he spoke would hold great meaning for me in the future as well.
"I'm not sure what you are all going to do, but please don't stay. I know you're all innocent, but the police are simply going to see a bunch of mutants in front of a fire."
He was off, heading toward the hospital to keep watch on Wolverine, Gambit, and Storm. I looked around me, realizing that camping in the woods (was i serious about that?) wasn't going to do at all. We needed to be away from here, before the authorities got here. And besides, there was nothing left here for us, just flames and the burnt ashes of memories.
"He's right," I said, turning to face the others, my eyes finding Rain again. I was getting more concerned about her. She had a look in her eye that...
"We have to go, anywhere but here," I said. "I don't know where, but the cops will be here in minutes, so let's just start walking..."

Anthony ran around the perimeter of the building looking for a face he recognized that wasn't tending to an injured senior X-man. He caught a glimpse of the others leaving school grounds. Anthony caught up with the group informing them he was alright. "So where are we headed?"

Mallory ( Rain )

" Well, If we must go, then lets go, I dont want to face the damn police ".

I stand up and look at everyone else...

" Who is coming? "

Lightwave considered leaving, but something made him feel uneasy. Hell, he couldn't just leave could he? The academy had become home.
Torn in two, between staying and camping or leaving with the others.
He made his way over to Mallory. "I'll stay, for a while. I want to try and help some of the people who can't travel yet, if I can. But I'll be following. I should be able to catch up."
