My idea for this is to take characters from X-Men and Marvel in general and spin them in a setting similar to the Netflix series Stranger Things. Basically, we have a normal world with normal humans, and then a government lab mishap leads to a portal into the Upside Down, and our characters are dragged inside and killed by monsters.
For the sake of having a high school setting at first but staying within the rules, all of our characters were held back in Kindergarten or First Grade. We are just starting our senior year at Hawkins High School in Hawkins, Indiana, and all turned eighteen prior to the first day. Life in the town has been fairly uneventful, but there have been a fair share of conspiracy theories regarding the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility located nearby, known as the Lighthouse.
Unbeknownst to the residents of Hawkins, S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists -- led by Dr. Abraham Erskine -- were working on Project Rebirth, a series of experiments that saw test subjects killed and then revived, giving them a brief glimpse into a ghost-like reflection of the mortal world, which came to be called the Upside Down. The experiments were focused on looking deeper into this other realm for longer amounts of time, but that led to a rip between the worlds that allowed several monsters to get out.
Those monsters happen upon a house party our characters are attending, and we are killed, our souls being dragged back into the Upside Down. We escape and return to our bodies, but now we are different. Changed. We develop powers, and soon the problem spreads, other portals opening up around the world. This leads to what the media labels as the "Mutant Crisis."
Eventually we discover that a secret organization known as HYDRA was funding Project Rebirth, influenced by a British man using the nickname Loki. Loki is the Earthly vassal for the Mind Flayer, also known as Lord Thanos. From here the story can branch out more.
