I just turned on the TV and saw that him and his entire family were found in his home today dead.... good grief.

They stopped the McMahon is dead storyline because of Benoit's rt death... I am looking on the net to see what is also said.

Damn, Chris was one of the best wrestlers out there.

RIP Canadian Crippler. :rose:

Very sad, freaky, and tragic. Entire familes don't usually die together from natural causes :(

While he wasn't the smoothest talker on the mic, Benoit was one of the greatest technical wrestlers of the past decade plus.

He was one of my favorites... not charismatic, but one of the few with a belieavable air of badass.

MSNBC website is saying the police suspect Benoit killed his wife and son and then killed himself.

If that's the case, that's horrible. I was a fan of the guy when I watched wrestling, but I can't imagine a scenario where a guy would kill his kid. I have a seven year old son and the story makes me shudder.

I was never a serious fan of WWF/WWE-style wrestling, seeing it mainly as a fake display mixed with comic-book storylines. Still, when WWE is shown on the Sci-Fi Channel, I can't help but watch (I admit I'm a fan of CM Punk :D ).

The whole melodrama about Vince McMahon's supposed 'death,' and the soap opera of his daughter that followed had me rolling my eyes. Ironic that the theater has been upstaged by real life.

But the death of Benoit and his family is serious business. It seems to be shaping up to a murder-suicide, pending the results of the official investigation.

That makes it a tragedy.

Having suffered some pretty close losses myself, if it is determined that Benoit murdered his family, and then committed suicide, all I can say is: Rot in Hell. If it is something else, then my sympathies go out to all three.

first inklings do not point to murder suicide, as least of the violent sort. there are no reports of any shooting. he said wife and daughter were coughing blood. deadly virus? poisoning?

Since the police are investigating it as a murder/suicide and there was a mention of him acting strangely the day before, I have a feeling this one is going to be open and shut, unfortunately. Chris has always been one of my favorite wrestlers, and was one of the few things worth watching in the Vince McMahon controlled sport (I enjoyed the WCW much more and thought the wrestling was far superior). If this goes the way I think it will, I'm guessing we'll see a steroid-feuled crime. The only thing that shocks me is that there aren't more problems to go along with the wrestlers who've died far too young due to the things they've put into their bodies. Honestly, I would have loved Benoit even if he didn't look like he was about to explode at any moment. His mentor was Brett Hart, who never looked like he did them (if he did, it certainly wasn't to the extent of most of these other genetic monsters paraded in front of the TV these days).

No matter what the facts turn out to be, I predict nothing will change in Pro Wrestling. These guys are going to keep destroying their bodies and we'll hear about 35-45 year olds dying from bizarre health conditions. It's truly sad.

The latest in a very sad story. Comment?

Benoit Strangled Wife, Smothered Son

ATLANTA (AP) - Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son. Steroid abuse has been linked to depression, paranoia, and aggressive behavior or angry outbursts known as "roid rage."

"We don't know yet. That's one of the things we'll be looking at," said Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard. He said test results may not be back for weeks.

Autopsies were scheduled Tuesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Authorities were investigating the deaths at a secluded Fayette County home as a murder-suicide and were not seeking any suspects. The official who described the manner of death spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information was to be released at a news conference later Tuesday.

Investigators believe Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) killed his wife, 43- year-old Nancy, and son Daniel during the weekend and then himself Monday. The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three separate rooms of the house, off a gravel road about two miles from the Whitewater Country Club.

Fayette County Coroner C.J. Mowell did not return calls seeking comment. The answering service for his funeral home said he was out of town.

Asked about the condition of the interior of the house, sheriff's Sgt. Keith Whiteside said investigators found "nothing really out of the ordinary." He said Benoit was found in the home's weight room, his wife in an office and the son in an upstairs bedroom.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.

"We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm," said Alaina Jones, who lives across the street.

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people," he said.

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., said authorities asked that it not release further information on the deaths.

Benoit, born in Montreal, was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles. His names in the ring included "The Canadian Crippler."

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said fellow Canadian Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment.

Benoit had maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling. The Fayette County Tax Assessors Office lists the value of the house, situated on more than 8.5 acres, at nearly $900,000.

The WWE canceled its live "Monday Night RAW" card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

Benoit's wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name "Woman." They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of a story line on World Championship Wrestling, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Benoit has two other children from a prior relationship.

At first I was stunned a like WTF!? But then when I saw Mr. McMahon on ECW tonight he retracted statements and said that condolences go out to the family but no more tributes will be made to Benoit. They pulled all his merch from the site, Toys R Us pulled his action figure from their webstore and hopefully the shelves.

I really used to like Chris Benoit, he was a not so big guy (only about 5'10" or so, a couple inches shorter than my hubby who saw him while setting up a show) but he worked his butt off in the ring. However all my respect died when I heard the story of how they died, not for his wife or son but for him. While he does not have a large history of abuse there has been some noted in his most recent marriage, his wife (Nancy) tried to divorce him in 2003 and even took out a restraining order against him. But three months later she got back together with him and called it off.

They also found track marks from needles in his son's arm, they are assuming it's from growth horomones because he was much smaller than anyone in the family. Nancy's body was found with bruises in a couple of places, which would indicate abuse but there was no struggle as far as they could tell.

That is where the story is that I got most of my information from, the other link is a list of stories that involve the whole incident.

It's sad really, his family deserved much better than this...

ETA: Vince's exact statement tonight on ECW...
The following message from Vince McMahon aired at the beginning of tonight's ECW on Sci Fi:
Last night on Monday Night Raw, the WWE presented a special tribute show, recognizing the career of Chris Benoit. However, now some 26 hours later, the facts of this horrific tragedy are now apparent. Therefore, other than my comments, there will be no mention of Mr. Benoit tonight. On the contrary, tonight's show will be dedicated to everyone who has been affected by this terrible incident. This evening marks the first step of the healing process. Tonight, the WWE performers will do what they do better than anyone else in the world--entertain you.

One of the sad reminders that needs to be taken from this is that there are always warning signs of abuse. From what I've read, there was a history of abuse, even if it wasn't as bad as some.

The whole thing is both creepy and bizzarre. Killing her on Friday, the son on Saturday, and himself Sunday after sending text messages to friends making sure they knew his exact address... It's just tragic.

There is also a possibility that he sat with his son and watched the pay per view, but I'm not sure if that goes along with the time of death at all. But it is sad, though I feel nothing for him as what he did was inexcuseable.

I lost all respect for this man, Killing an innocent child especially one with a problem just burns my insides. I cried when I heard but I didn't cry for Chris. I cried for the little boy who will never see the light of day ever again, he'll never go on his first date, he'll never get to experience what other teenagers do. He'll never get to learn how to drink, or even vote in an election.
I used to think he was a great wrestler but as a man he lost ALL of my respect.

Rest in peace Daniel, the angels above have you now.

I cried when I sat there watching the tribute, before the details were known. But once the details were known I too lost respect for him as a man, him as a wrestler he was a great performer but as a man he no longer has any of my respect.

Remember to think of Nancy as well, she does not get to see her son go through any of that either. Not to mention she'll never see her son grow up and have a family, she'll never have any more of those proud moments that parents have.

man how sad

man I don't feel sorry for him but I feel sorry to see a 7 year old kid died like thatI can't believe that he killed is own family and then himself

He's going down as the O.J. Simpson of pro wrestling. It makes me sick as I once competed in collegiate/free style and catchascatcan wrestling. I was never a huge fan of the showy choreographed stuff, but performers like Benoit, Angle, and Malenko always managed to draw my attention. Tragic and reprehensible how he lived up to his nicknames - "rabid" and "crippler".

btw, his dr., Phil Astin, a possible source of some of the drugs that fucked him up is under investigation; his office was raided by the DEA and is now closed.

From what I heard, he overheard his wife taling about "Ben Wa Balls", and how great they were. He felt good about that. Then when he saw an email on the same subject, and realized what she meant, he went berserk. I'm not saying that's true; I'm just repeating gossip.
