Written Sounds

Well now look what you done. Engines humming, thinking. Purring like a cat fed and snug.

Of course, setting would play into it, too. Right?

Sound carries differently under different conditions. Sometimes sex sounds are free to scream out at full volume, say if you're out in the middle of nowhere. Then I suppose it wouldn't be necessary to describe the loud body slaps and slurps and such, because the reader - at least speaking for myself - could practically assume the animalistic grunts and unbridled screams. On the other end of the spectrum, sometimes those sex sounds are under enforced restraint, say lovers meet up in a place where other people are near, and they go to a quiet place for a quickie. In this case it's the opposite. One or two little peeps that slip out are plenty to get the idea across.

Again, not that I do it successfully, but this thread is a timely reminder.
Did I do that? *halo* Oh, God, whatever it is I did, pleae make me do that again!!!

Yes you did.
That wasn't enough?!
I'm only a man with human limitations...

you weren't upset by the over-exposed adjectives?
I've been chastised for such adjective use in the past so I hesitate to use them, but, sometimes in the excitement... like meandering strings of ellipses...

The education I've received is from Heinlien and gentlemen/women of his ilk. My higher learning has come from poetry boards.

I have a huge vocabulary but can't pronouce much of it.

What's an elipsiethingy? ;)

I wouldn't worry about overexposed - anything.

the ellipsisthingy is a series of dots or periods, generally come in threes. More than one ellipsisthingy would ellipsesethingies. It is advised that the ellipse/isethingies be used with great care and caution, much like adjectives. The cautions are not without merit, but sometimes it just seems like nothing else fits like a couple nice juicy hungry squirming little ellipsesthingies.

But back to the topic of sound.
The wet petal thingy is really interesting.
Because if someone were to strum their thumb over the wet petals or pluck their fingers in an upward motion, and it was quiet, and an ear was lent near, it would hear a definite sound. I can hear the sound in my mind. But to describe it? That's a toughie. Of course, a reader may not need the sound described, but as a writer or a would-be writer, I'd like to be able to describe it, then when it comes to it, I can choose to describe or allude or suggest.
Wow... tough stuff...

Actually ellipses always "come in threes" That's the definition of an Ellipsis -- three repreated punctuation marks indicating deleted/missing text or an incomplete thought.

That's why scene breaks and time shifts are (or a least should be) three (and only three) asterisks or other symbols -- ***, ###, @@@, %%%, or &&&, etc -- they indicate something left out or skipped over.

If a ellipsis comes at the end of a sentence, keep the punctuaion mark of the sentence; this is why some elllipsis look like they're four periods, but are actually one ellipsis and one period.

(sorry, Ellipses are a pet peeve)

I think sounds can be felt by the rhythm of the written word. (I think dirty talk, especially, is all about rhythm and cadence, not necessarily what is actually said.) When I want to use non-verbal sounds in dialog instead, I have a loose rule: no sound effect should be longer than three letters.

"I still think you need to work on your priorities. Priority one: fuck me. Mm. Priority two: fuck me. Mm, God, you taste good. Priority three: fuck m—oh, fuck me, Dee, just fuck me!"

"I have! I will! Wait a minute, I think I am—Ga-Galatea! No more ambush sex, you promised!"

"We've had this conversation already. It ends with—mm—you fucking me so—ooh—so why stop now?"

"You know, I think you've got a point…"

"Mm—God, Dee! Yes. Fuck! More. God. More."
