Laurel....you're right....every thread does lead to sex...but oh what a tapestry we could weave when we work together in this world....to quote a dear friend from the lesson he showed me today....

Much like Bob indicated I use a blend of knowing what the story is, discovering the story as I write, sketching a plot and hammering out the details.
Often when I am writing my mind is traveling much much faster than my fingers. I have learned that when my mind has what I think is a good passage, to stop and capture it. Sometime the passage is 3 or 4 paragraphs away when it finally fits into the story. I have lost a few that I did not take the time to note somewhere. I find I can go back to the details I was writing and pick up where I left off, but if I don't write down that gem of a thought right then and there I may lose it.
Another thing I do is put my story down for a time then pick it up and try to read it as if it is the first time I have seen it. It's difficult to do because you know the story, but if you can do it it will help you know if the story flows right for you and for the readers you are trying to appeal to.

I guess I have a different style. I like to leave out my partners name in my story so any woman can place herself in the story. Of course, if anyone is going to get laid in MY stories, it's going to be ME. I have been reading erotic stories for quite some time (I'm a horny little bastard) and I have yet to find another person who writes from this perspective. I guess my question is, does this style work? I can see where guys may be put off by not only the style, but also the romantic side to some of my stories. I think like most people who write, I am a little self conscious about how people feel when they read my stories. BTW Laurel, I am wondering how my Valentines Day story got categorized as being a "Non consent" story. I was thinking the woman in the story was quite willing. =0l)

Most of my stories evolve directly from the characters. They're all old friends, PCs and NPCs from my PnP gaming days. Nearly everything I write in that world is expanding or revising on little tidbits of history off the back of character sheets. I pick a point in time, and turn the characters loose.
I don't always know where they're going to go between A & B, and sometimes both A & B get sidestepped as well. Once I turn them loose, they're in control. It's nothing unusual for me to delete a page or two of stuff that's obviously of interest to the characters, but slows down the story to a crawl as they sit around shooting the bull
Otherwise, it could be anything. Something I'm writing right now drew inspiration from a picture. One of the Laresa chapters was built off of a picture as well.
Most of my Laresa stories grew out of kid's movies, which I see much more of than regular t.v.
LST3K should be obvious
In some cases, I'll decide to write something for a category to expand my horizons. No Purer Love and It Cuts Both Ways are examples of that.
Sometimes it's just the thought of something kinky that pops into my head. I then backtrack from the bump-n-grind and figure out who's doing it and why. Thricegiving ( in the Winter Contest ) is an example of this.
In almost all cases, it goes back to the same place as number one. Once I know who the characters are, they pick out an apartment in my crowded head and start living their lives. From there, I just record what I see.
I need very little of my brain at work, so I have hours after hours to muse ( when she's not vacationing somewhere on me ) Most everything congeals there, if it doesn't arise there in the first place. It's how I keep my (questionable) sanity.

You write much the same way I do. The action unfolds like a movie in my head, with the characters leading the way.
It's the characters who decide the action. Each has a distinctive personality and will behave in a prescribed way to any given situation. Some are volatile while others are congenial. It can make for some pretty interesting partnerships.

I often derive inspiration from the world around me...people, places, incidents, situations...'what if' scenarios with an erotic twist...I read tons of sci-fi and fantasy books, comic books and magazines when I was young...percolated that in my fevered brain over the years...I have written to specific Lit cats with some success...but mainly I write for fun and because I enjoy it...it's exhilarating to take the fetters from your imagination and let it fly free...if my work entertains, so much the better...but above all else, I write for me.

There's a flash of inspiration, most often a scene. Then I'll start asking questions. 'Who are these characters? What are they like? How did they get to this point? What happens after?' It's sort of a Socratic dialog with myself.
The clearest I can remember for inspiration was for my story The Orange Slip, now published as part of Gillian's Place.
I was working as a janitor in a complex devoted to arts of all forms I walked into a gallery there and saw this painting.

i agree with the stream on conciousness theme. I like to write with pencil and paper early on and start with themes and feelings. My stories seem to evolve from a single idea, name, place of emotion.
But after i have anchored down an idea its very much, lots of time thinking then a flurry of writing in one sitting

I haven't posted anything to this board in quite a while, but thought I'd join in momentarily.
Usually, I get an idea of some sort, and let it rattle around in my head for a while. If it sticks around, I figure it's worth putting down somewhere. I then try and work up some kind of start. Sometimes that's the hardest part, finding an approach that'll make sense for the idea I've come up with.
After I have my start, I just let the story flow. Sort of the stream-of-consciousness bit, I guess. I like to think of it as my characters taking the story where they think it should go, with the idea or ideas I originally had as kind of destinations along the way.
Sometimes the story comes pretty easily. Often, I get a bunch written and hit a wall. Right now, I have over a half dozen stories in various stages of completion. Some are 30+ pages and I don't know where to go from where I am. I know I have at least one finished, and just have been procrastinating submitting it.
A suggestion I remember reading once many years ago: Write your story, then let it sit for a while. This way, you tend to forget some of what you *meant* to write. When you come back to it, you read it more like a first-timer would, and you can potentially catch spots that are confusing and the like. It's a big aid in self-editing.

Once the plot pleases me, I create major scenes using raw material I've collected from thousands of old periodicals. When I come across extraordinary prose, I save it in a file for future use. I call them 'inlays.'
After the whole piece is assembled, I edit to improve the vocabulary, effect, and flow of the tale. Then polish.
