I'm sure this topic has absolutely been done to death already countless times but I haven't spotted any threads. I have lots of ideas for story's but I find the writing the actual sex quite hard. How do you keep your sex scenes original (I mean not just like the previous ones you've written)? I find it easier when the sex is between new characters because their personalities dictate how it goes to a degree and of course everyone does it differently but after they've had sex three or four times I am really starting to scratch my head.

Does any one have any suggestions, or can you recommend any of those essays in the how to section?

Maybe I'm just writing in the wrong genre, maybe smut just isn't my thing

Maybe I'm not one to speak about this, but the writing should be about reactions, not mechanics. The mechanics of sex might be pretty much the same, but if you've made the characters different, with different hang-ups, desires, and physical responses, that will be reflected in the descriptions of their love-making. As your characters get to know and trust each other, they'll reveal things to each other that will be reflected in their sexual activity. In in doing that, they'll discover things about themselves that they didn't know before. That's where the story (and, in my humble opinion, the eroticism) is.

It is difficult. Most of my characters are promiscuous or polyamorous, and often bisexual, so I get to make them have sex in endless combinations. But when their relationships evolve, their sex changes too, and you can track the changes through each scene.

If you write a good many stories, the sex part of the scenes isn't going to go beyond a certain number of variations. But what the sex is couched in--the setting, the response of characters, lead in and withdrawal from, the placement of--can vary quite a bit. The sex itself needn't always be different. We all seek a certain particular "nirvana" in the height of sex. That can always or frequently be the same, with the variation being what/where/with whom/how set up around it varying.

Sex isn't about action, it's about reaction. I like to have my characters experience lousy sex, so that when they do have the great sex, it means more to the story. Everyone knows the heartbreak and disappointment of failures in having sex, but not many write them into stories. Sex should be real if the characters are real. It's all about the emotions it stirs within us to have it and have the best time of it.

I've had enough sex to know what happens to people during it and all those things are real about it. Pussy farts, farts, premature ejaculation, etc. are all things that happen, as well as selfish acts by those who only think of their own pleasure. Sex should be a triumph of the spirit to play out well, IMHO. ;):)

All good points below. If I'm reading your question correctly, your issue is how to make multiple sex scenes between the same characters interesting and different. As you are writing, think about why these characters are doing it again and again, and what it means to their relationship. Did someone lose their virginity the first time? How did they feel? Are they having make up sex? Break up sex? Same old humdrum sex? Explore those feelings.

One more thing: By the time your characters are having sex with each other for the third or fourth time, your readers might be ready to move on. Is the sex still serving the story, or has it become obligatory? Are you telling a story or just stringing together sex scenes?

When I started writing, I kind of had a similar road block, thinking, "How can I keep writing sex scenes? Aren't they all the same? It'll be the same thing over and over again."

What I've realized is that sex scenes are different because the stories and the characters are different.

If you write a story about a young office girl becoming sexually involved with her much older & dominant boss, the sex is going to be much different than a romance story.

If the character is a virgin, then the sex is going to be much different than an experienced woman.

Basically you have to factor in the personality of the characters, as well as the circumstances.

For instance, if the female character is young & prudish, you want to talk about how hesitant and nervous she is during the sexual encounter. If the female character is older, prim & proper, and she's fighting her desires against something that's taboo, you want to talk about how she's struggling with herself. ect...

Also, through in different sex acts and foreplay to change things up between the stories.

Just about every time we have sex, it's different. Sometimes we're talkative. Sometimes we're romantic and other times just horny and want to get off.

Similarly in a story, vary the locations, the dialogue, the positions, etc. Don't make any two sex scenes the same. In one, you can mention the odor of aroused pussy and the vision of erect nipples. In another, you can describe the male's erection, the sweat, the grunts and moans, and so on. Even for the same two individuals, vary your words so the scene is fresh and new for the readers.

Nothing is more boring than reading about the same in and out of sex after the third or tenth time.

To give you an idea of how to be original in every sex scene you write, imagine every poster here in your thread and what having sex would be like with each one. I know you'll see each scenario play out differently in your mind, as each one brings a different thought of action to you.

I wrote a story where the sex scenes were almost identical each time the couple had sex, showing that boring routine of doing the same thing on certain nights of the week and calling it sex. It wasn't until a third of the story that I brought in the catalyst for change and had something different happen each time after that.

Give your characters as much 'bedroom personality' as they you give them the regular traits and such.

Sex scenes isn't about sex. It's about the characters that have sex. The story surrounding those character that leads to the sex. Sex is Sex. Who is having that sex is what it's all about. Tell or as some say, show, the story of your characters that will get around to the sex, just don't write about the sex.

Another aspect to consider is the goal of the writing. Are you writing to arouse, to entertain, or to simply move the story forward? Ideally, you'd be doing all three, but not every sex scene is going cover all the bases.

I'm not really a writer, but it appears to me that writing for arousal is all about drawing out the action, teasing the reader, making the reader beg for it, so to speak. In real life, sex doesn't always happen that way. Sometimes it's clumsy, sometimes it's comical, sometimes only one partner gets off, sometimes it makes a big mess.... Oh crap, now I'm getting aroused.

Just put in a throbbing cock, a pulsing pussy and a raging orgasm and you can't go wrong... :)

Yep, this. My catchphrase is "sex is a conversation people have via their bodies". (Or "intercourse", as Jane Austen would have put it.) Yes, there's likely to be an orgasm in it for somebody but that's not the whole story. It can be an expression of love, anger, trust. Novelty doesn't come from dreaming up a new physical position or a new partner every time, it comes from what's in their heads.

Sex isn't about action, it's about reaction. I like to have my characters experience lousy sex, so that when they do have the great sex, it means more to the story. Oh yes! One of the scenes I'm most proud of was where two people are making love in the dark, with a bit of a D&S vibe to it, when the sub gets startled by an unexpected noise and accidentally headbutts her partner in the mouth. I love those moments. It doesn't all have to be mind-shattering orgasms.

Short answer: Yes. Writing sex scenes is challenging at best. Writing a lot of them in story after story can verge on grueling. It can even become tedious if you're the sort who sticks to the same themes with limited variations.

But that's the game. If writing was easy, everyone would do it.

If you make your character real and their actions and reactions true-to-life, you won't have to worry aboout sameness in your sex senes. Also the devil is in the detail. There are only so many dirty words, but there is an endless supply of scents, sounds shapes, colors, sizes, for example was his penis, white, pink or brown, blsck, ebony, scarlet, etc. or maybe blood red? Was it cut or uncut, smooth or wrinkled, how did it smell, taste, feel? (don't ever say it felt "nice" or :good" In my tiny hand, his cock felt like an iron pipe enclosed in velvet. (?) Did the distended blood red inner lips of her pussy grasp his cock as it slid from her. Did his cock slide in and out of her through his foreskin that remained captured in her tight ass ring. Details details, description. and characterization those are the keys. (for me)

thanks again everyone, some really helpful suggestions here, particularly about the sex changing as the nature of the relationships change, but everything everyone has said really. will definitely refer back to this thread when I'm next writing a sex scene, which should be soon!

I'm thinking of making a summary of this thread and having it tattooed on the inside of my left arm.

(With some nice scrollwork around it, of course.)

Another thing: Dialogue during, before, and after sex is also really hot.

Not just "Oh god..I'm cumming!"

But dirty talk, or the female character admitting that she had been fantasizing about this all along, and that she had always been to afraid to do it. ect...

Personally I find my sex scenes utterly lacking in depth of descriptions of feelings and emotions. I try to give them deeper meaning and a feeling of urgency, with a wow factor that will get anyone off, but I come up short every single time (at least in my mind). Hell, I haven't finished or released anything in years because I just don't feel like any of my current work is living up to my standards.

When I'm reading a story, if there is sex scene after sex scene, I just skip through at some point once I get saturated. Of course that's if the main plot and characters are engaging enough for me to want to find out what happens. If there's no plot, I move on to another story.

I don't think I write in as many sex scenes as I did when I first started. The last two I did I put in little teases, before the characters actually gets to have sex and orgasm. A character would get excited when/where he/she couldn't have sex with themselves or with another, think about sex, be aroused, but no fulfillment until later. That cut down on the number of actual sex scenes in the story.

ha ha ha!

or maybe we should just write one of those 'how to' guides?

I'm realising that the two stories i've written so far are predominantly about sex, the stories in the pipe line are more plot driven, so maybe it will be easier in the future.

sorry to hear that TheeGoatPig, that must be really frustrating, I wish you more inspiration in the future

There are some good how to guides scattered around these forums and the web. One I recall that was especially helpful advised getting around the problem of endless repetition of words like "cock" and "pussy" by not using them much at all. "He filled her up delightfully" works as well as "His cock filled her pussy delightfully." (Uninspired example, but you get the drift.)
