Amazing stuff that until 99 years ago today nobody had ever flown a powered machine....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk on North Carolina's Outer Banks, descendants of six of the eight witnesses to the first flight, at 10:35 a.m. on Dec. 17, 1903, placed a half-dozen wreaths at the foot of a 1928 monument in the Wright Brothers National Memorial marking the spot where the Flyer took off.
An audience of about 2,000 watched as the 99 aircraft flew over in the same weather conditions that drew the Wright brothers to the North Carolina coast strong, sustained wind and a clear sky. A solo parachutist spiraled to earth trailing red smoke, followed by members of the Army's Golden Knights parachute team who glided to earth about 50 feet from the granite marker where the first flight ended.
It seemed unlikely that two bicycle makers from Dayton could change the world as they did on that winter day 99 years ago. Orville, who won the honor in a coin toss to become the first powered pilot, piloted the Wright Flyer 120 feet along the dunes, staying aloft for 12 seconds. It was the first of four short flights that day; the longest was 852 feet.
Hey, thanks for stopping by, Roobs...I find the whole notion of flight tres cool, plus Kitty Hawk has very pretty beaches with big dunes. Kids use snowboards on them now.
can't wait for next year, they are finishing a working replica and soon they will know how to make it work. no one knows how to make it fly right but they have a year. way to go guys
I think the graphic you included with the article is a mistake.
That's a recent photo of the bankrupt United Airlines' entire fleet.
Don't forget other pioneers too...
Here's to Richard Pearse: "Mad Pearse", "Bamboo Dick", self-taught inventor, prophetic designer, trail blazing aviator and eccentric visionary. On or about 31st March 1903 a reclusive New Zealand farmer Richard Pearse climbed into a self-built monoplane and flew for about 140 metres before crashing into a gorse hedge on his Waitohi property.
*Like a race to the moon, people separated by great distances at that time, all striving to achieve their dream of flight! Bravo! :D :rose:
This is the new recycled Lancasteroil?
You are cut and pasting shit to get your posts up?
What's that in the air? Sniff, sniff. I think it's the aroma of pathetic desperation, and we know where it's coming from.
If you guys ever have the chance to visit the Memorial, go for it. It's a grand site. Not to mention, the Outer Banks surrounding it- glorious.
