(04-14) 17:28 PDT PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A man who was tackled and beaten by a group of Roman Catholic schoolgirls after he flashed them outside their high school was sentenced Wednesday to 10 months to two years in prison.

Rudy Susando, 25, also was sentenced to 5 years probation after his release, Assistant District Attorney Noel Ann DeSantis said. Susando, a native of Indonesia, also might face deportation after his sentence is served, DeSantis said.

Susando was arrested Oct. 30 when more than a dozen girls from St. Maria Goretti High School for Girls, with the help of a bystander, chased him and wrestled him to the ground and held him for police. When he resisted, the girls kicked him repeatedly. He was treated for minor injuries at a hospital.

The South Philadelphia schoolgirls said the man had been exposing himself outside the school for about a month and a half, typically jumping out from behind a van, then running away, police said.

Susando was convicted in February of 13 counts each of indecent exposure, open lewdness, corrupting minors and stalking.

Public defender David Cross asked to delay the sentencing, saying he plans to appeal.

Maria Goretti died at the age of 11 after being attacked by her neighbour who tried to rape her.

So interestingly enough at the school named after a raped girl, the girls have learned not to forgive the rapist but to punish and get them.

And they say that Roman Catholic upbringing is good for nothing.

At a ripe pre-adolescence I learned about Maria Goretti in the seventh grade. My lay-teacher, Mr. Schnaubel (he looked like Ichabod Crane) read an extremely graphic account of the attempted rape and how the attacker stabbed the girl repeatedly until she died. All part and parcel of teaching us fifties girls how to fear sex.

Maria was declared a saint and promoted to Catholic girls because she would rather have died than lose her virginity. The attacker was present, and appropriately repentant at her canonization ceremony.

I'm quite positive that those girls these days don't fear sex per se, but rather have learned to have a healthy awareness of sexual predators. A kind of heartwarming story. (The one about the overpowered flasher, not the one about Maria Goretti, which is, of course, sainthood or not, a tragedy.)

Interesting irony in that story. Rape to me is the most dispicable act, no one has the right to impose on someone else. Flashing is not even close to rape, but it does impose on the rights of others.

I seem to remember reading a story about another Catholic woman, who refused to let herself get raped, and instead got beaten to death, and the community pronounced her a saint for protecting her virginity with her life.

That took place in Italy in the Middle Ages. I had sort of hoped that the idea of virginity being more important than life had died out before the renaissance, but I see that my hope was in vain.

Quite recent on the grand scale of such things then *P* darling, rather puts young Svenska's fears up a notch or two.

The thing I find most disturbing about the sad tale of young Maria... being non Catholic as I am... is the fact that her attacker was at her Cannonisation duly forgiven his sins. I guess he confessed to a priest, said his three Hail Mary's in penance and that was that then.

Surprised her parents didn't string the bastard up by his balls, hell that would only have been punishable with two Hail Mary's.
