I came back from holiday a week ago to find a lil bit of feedback on my story. Nothing longwinded - just a polite 'good story' mail, which made me feel pretty good as it's been a long time since I had any feedback.

So I thought I'd check my votes - I'd have one new vote and my score had dropped dramatically.

Now it could just be coincidence - someone hated my god-awful pile of crap and voted it down accordingly. Fair enough - that's what it's there for. But, then again, my story doesn't attract a huge number of reads being a Novella (17 votes since March this year) and about 6 pieces of feedback. It would be odd to get a vote AND a piece of feedback from two different sources in a seven day period.

Has this happened to anyone else? Let's face it, the (best) label is not really that big, and there's a lot of people out there who don't read labels anyway (I work on an IT support line and I'm forever saying "press the Enter key. No, it's the one with Enter written on it.")

This isn't a rant because I don't much care for votes anyway - I prefer feedback where people choose to give it. The feedback I've got from friends and the change in their opinion of me is enough - I know how good my story is :)

Maybe they didn't vote but left feebdack. Then someone who decided not to leave feedback voted poorly.

Another thought is that it is possible they didn't vote but left feedback. You can leave feedback at a member's bio page. It's unlikely though.

Regardless, sorry to hear about your story's scoring misfortune. I haven't read it yet, although if it's anything like the snippet of poetry in your sigline, it ought to be delicious.

That is such an old joke around here, it has whiskers down to here.
Where?

Dear Earl,
If you try to figger those things out, it will definitely make you crazy. Back when I paid attention to voting, I studied things like that. Look at me now.

Well, it did cross my mind - if I got more than a few reads per week I'd just accept it and move on (hey, hang on... I already accepted and moved on... oh, well) but I thought maybe I'd share my views anyway.

PS glad you like the lil poem - I like to keep em short, sweet and to the point. Hopefully you're already looking forward to The Fallen even though it's not finished yet...

Maybe the person who send you the feedback actually DID vote 1, because he/she thought that meant "you're number 1" or something?

People ARE stupid, you know.
