Last week the wife and I decided to replace the DVD Player we were using as well as the sound system. Both were giving us problems.

We checked out a couple of stores and weren't finding what we wanted. All we wanted was a single system. Something that would play a single DVD and maybe even hook into the TV. We didn't want a lot of power, 100 or 200 watts was all we needed. (Our living room is small.) We also didn't want to shell out a lot of green.

We were getting a bit unhappy when we hit one store. Their smaller systems were more than we wanted to pay. They wanted over $200.00 for any of the systems in our size range. I was starting to think about heading down to BrandSmart and picking up an old el cheapo DVD Player. Then I noticed a system over on the "As Is" rack. I wandered over and looked it over.

It was a bit larger than I wanted but it was the right kind of system. I could run the TV sound through it. It had a built in DVD Player and it was only $50.00. I looked it over and found that the problem was the wires to the speakers had broken off. I paid the money and brought the system home.

It took a couple of minutes to open up the speakers and replace the wires. It wasn't hard work but it was a bit picky. I went out and picked up some good quality shielded wires for this. I set up the system, I placed the speakers and ran the wires for them. That was last week and I didn't finish until late in the evening on Friday. Because we had to work the next several days I never fired up the system.

This evening we fired up the system and dropped a DVD into it. (The Fifth Element if you need to know.) I sat back in my chair as my wife settled down on the couch. I hit play and nearly got knocked out of my chair. I rapidly turned down the volume.

Maybe a 1000 Watt System is a bit much for a living room that is all of ten feet deep by thirteen feet wide. On the other hand we could hear everything quite clearly.

I have the feeling I'm going to have to be carefull with this new sound system.

Years ago, back when my brother was a heavy drinker after the afternoon shift, he got a new home theater system and asked me to come over and check it out. It was around one in the morning, on a school night, when he put in a DVD of Independence Day and cranked it up where the aliens blow up the White House. It shook the whole fucking house and all six of his kids came running down the stairs in a panic. Of course when they realized it was just their dad being a dick they shrugged, said "Hi, Uncle Boota" and went back to bed.

This is America. More is better.

The Fifth Element is one of my favorite movies.

More is better up to a point.

Remember I live in a Mobile Home. Too much volume and it's going to start vibrating. Hell I turn it up too much I'll blow the siding off.

And I'm sure your siding is as over-engineered as the rest of your place, which says quite a bit about the power of your speakers ;)

Yeah ... umm ... I never got that. How do you, umm, live in a mobile home? I always thought that was more for ... Dutch pensioners going on half-year "trips" to the seaside ... :S ... really never understood that.
