It’s another Boortz “I told you so.”

Bill Campbell’s arrogance has cost the taxpayers of Atlanta another $2.4 million or so. Can you say “Thank you, Mr. Mayor?”

The issue was the lawsuit brought by the Southeastern Legal Foundation against Atlanta’s so-called “affirmative action” program which mandated that companies doing business with the city subcontract no less than 34 percent of the work to minority-owned companies. Similar programs were being struck down across the country by federal courts. Simply put, the programs were unconstitutional.

The SELF notified the city that a lawsuit would be forthcoming if it didn’t dismantle its unconstitutional discrimination program. Bill Campbell puffed himself up like some demented blowfish and loudly announced that the city would “never” abandon its minority program. If the SELF filed suit it would be a “fight to the death.”

Yeah, some fight to the death. As the suit progressed Campbell decided he wasn’t going to defend the constitutionality of the program. In other words, he caved. The program was unconstitutional, he knew it, and he threw in the towel.

When Campbell first issued his “fight to death” ultimatum I told you that his egomania was going to cost the taxpayers --- big time. Well, here’s the tab. We have $1.8 million for the cities legal fees and the costs of dismantling the unconstitutional program. Another $100,000 or so in damages to the plaintiff companies that were discriminated against, and nearly $440,000 in fees and expenses to the SELF.

Now --- to add insult to injury. After costing the Atlanta taxpayers $2.4 million in a losing cause, Atlanta’s ace city attorney Susan Pease Langford says “We feel victorious.”

I wonder how “victorious” the taxpayers who paid the tab feel.
