Please check out our OOC: Get Smart thread for information on how to take part in this one.

Our story begins as Max enters the Control chief's office looking pretty ragged:
"Hi Chief..."
"Max, what happened to you?"
"Some guy tried to run me down on a car. Luckily I jumped aside just in the nick of time and leaped for his running board."
"What happened?"
"They don't make running boards anymore."

The Chief winces, and motions for Max to take a seat. "99 will be here in a moment, Max, she's teaching a class on survival techniques to the new agents."
"Survival where, Chief?"
"Surviving while accompanying... uh, more experienced agents, Max."

Shortly, the lovely Agent 99 arrives, and is seated beside Max. The Chief begins,

"Max, what have you found out about Kaos's Headquarters?"
"Isn't that top security information Chief?"
"Yes Max."
"Well you don't expect me to talk about it right out here in the open like this? I demand the cone of silence."
"Max, do we have to?"
"Well, with vital information like this, of course we have to Chief!"
"Okay, you win Max." The Chief presses the intercom button, "Hodgkins, lower the cone of silence."
The Cone of silence is activated and surrounds Max, 99 and the Chief at his desk.
"Now, what did you find out?"
"Nothing."
The Chief, obviously annoyed, jabs at the intercom button, "Hodgkins, raise the cone of silence!"
The Cone of Silence disappears into the ceiling.
"If you had nothing to report then why did you insist on lowering that?"
"Well Chief, Rule 13 says that if you..."
"Why do you always have to live by the rules?"
"Because rule 27 says that you must live by the rules of the book."
"All right, Never mind, someday I'll learn."
"Well, it's all right there in the book, all you have to do is look."
"Max! Ah, nevermind. I've a new assignment for you two. Professor Pythias Pomegranite is one of our top Control scientists. Lately, he has been working on a behavior modification ray. When perfected, any criminal subjected to its effects will instantly be turned into a law-abiding citizen."

Agent 99 speaks up, "Why, that's wonderful, Chief!"

The Chief nods to her, "Yes, we would think so. However, KAOS would stop at nothing to see that such a device never becomes a reality."

Max chimes in, "Well, of course, Chief. One good zap, and that pile of rotteness would become Boy Scouts, and then what would they do?"

The Chief looks at Max wearily, "Right. What I want the two of you to do is to go undercover and protect Professor Pomegranite while he attends a conference. Max, you'll be a visiting scientist, a guest in the lab. 99, you'll be his assistant. We already know KAOS agents have infiltrated the conference, so be on your guard at all times. Now, Max, you realize that, disguised as an expert in that field, you will also be a target for every KAOS spy there? You'll be in terrible danger every second!"

Max gives him a steely look, "And loving it!"

Agent 99

Much later, Agent 99 was standing in the hallway and knocking on the door to Max's apartment. She fully expected to hear the numerous locks on his door as he opened it for her but instead she heard his voice through the door.

"Who is it," She heard him say.

"Max, it's me, 99."

"How do I know its you? Whats the password?"

"Max, we dont have a password," She said, exaspiration in her voice.

"Ah Hah!," He said,"But they dont know that.

With a sigh 99 opens the door and steps into Max's apartment and taps him on the shoulder, startling him.

Turning he steps back and looks at her. "Oh, it's you, 99. Are you ready to begin our mission."

"Yes, Max," She said as she looked him up and down in his Control disguise. She herself was dressed in a white lab coat with false glasses and hair piled onto of her head. She looked every inch the scientist's assistant.

"Max," She said with an affectionate smile,"You look very handsome and distinguished in that disguise."

Maxwell Smart, Agent 86

Max was dressed in a tweed jacket, with patches at the elbows, and was smoking a Meerschaum pipe. "Thank you, 99, mastery of disguise is a key element in any spy's successful career. Of course, I had the lab work up a few surprises... For example, this pipe looks like an ordinary pipe, but it is actually capable of delivering an intoxicating gas, if blown instead of sucked. Like so!" Max blew into the pipe, which he was holding with the bowl open towards his face. Immediately, his head was surrounded with a purplish cloud.

99 stepped back, to avoid the gas, but Max, startled, breathed in a lungful or two. His eyes immediately glazed over, and he started to sway. "Sho y' shee, nine-eenine, itsh a verra 'fective wepun." He blinked at her, owlishly. "Hello, bootiful!"

Agent 99

"Oh, Max," 99 says as she gives him an exasperated look and then goes behind him to take the pipe and lead him to the couch.

Just as she sits him down, his phone rings and she turns to pick it up. "Hello," She says and then,"Oh, hello, Chief. Yes, we are just about to leave. Max? Well, he is...um...he is just making sure the equiptment for R&D is working properly. Yes, Chief, I'll tell him."

Putting down the phone she turns to Max just as he is shaking off the effects of the gas. "That was the chief, Max," She said,"He said to tell you that R&D forgot to fill you in on the cufflinks. The right one is really a small powerful magnet that can be activated by twisting the left one one-half turn. And if you twist it a full turn...."

Max was standing up at that point and looked down at his cufflinks. "Like this," He said giving the left cufflink not a half twist but a full one.

99's "No, Max!" was unheeded as Max was instantly pulled across the room and his right cufflink drawn and stuck to one of the many locks on the door. A moment later keys, metal ashtrays, a lighter and anything else metal and not tied or nailed down was flying across the room and stuck to Max, 99 having to nimbly duck out of the way.

Looking at Agent 86 she sighed and finished her sentence. "...It triples the power of the magnet. Oh, Max!"

Maxwell Smart

Max, buried in metallic objects from all over the room, quietly says "99, don't tell me they didn't tell you how to turn the magnet off..."

Nearby...
Naomi Farkus, deep undercover agent of KAOS, hears a commotion from her neighbor's apartment. Sounds as though a terrific battle is being fought. Perhaps someone has finally done for that annoying Control agent, Maxwell Smart?

Agent 99

"They didnt tell me how to turn off the magnet, Max," 99 said in an apologetic tone.

"99, I told you not to tell me that," Max replied under all the metal he was wearing.

"Sorry, Max," 99 said as she hurried over to the phone to call R&D and ask for directions on getting her partner out of this predicament.

Shtarker

The Bavarian cuckoo alarm clock chirped exactly at 6:00 a.m. in the tiny room. Shtarker opened his eyes, clicked his boots together and rolled out of his cot, nestling his stuffed Wolfie doll back against the pillow before tucking in the blankets with military precision. Already fully dressed (every good KAOS agent must always be prepared!), he carefully combed his hair in the mirror as he hummed Wagner's 'The Ride of the Valkyrie'. He marched to the nearby door, enthusiastically voicing the tune: "Ba-bababaaa-ba Ba-bababAAA-ba Ba-babaBAAAA-ba" He rapped three quick times on the door emblazoned with the KAOS logo and entered Siegfried's room. With a quick salute and sharp clack of heels, he continued his wake-up call: "Ba-BaBaBAAA-Ba Ba-BabaBaaaaaa!"
