Would you read a story by a AH member that you liked if the story was in a cat that doesn't attract you- and you *hadn't* been asked specifically to read it?

Would you?
Have you?
If you would, are there limits to what cats you'd be willing to read, even of a friend/co-author.
Is there a cat you would not read of your own accord, but would read if asked?

that is all. you may begin. :p

Yes, I have, and yes, I would. I don't typically read incest stories but read Yui's open recommendation. I don't typically read horror stories but have read people like Vella and Rob. If I respect someone's writing enough, I'll venture into pretty much any category for them.

What SJ said.

I would read it and have, especially if I've clicked on an author's story page after reading something in the AH that had me interested in checking out their writing. I've found the AH authors often will be able to capture my interest in the story even if the category isn't my kink.

I have trouble getting into SciFi and Non-Human, though. I doubt I would read those unless asked.

ETA - exception that proves the Non-Human rule, Shang's "Will".

What she said.
I don't guarantee I will finish a specific story in a category that doesn't appeal to me, but I will give it a damn good try.
On the other hand if I'm specifically asked by a fellow AH-er to read and comment on a story, even in a category I don't normally read, I will read it all.

Yes. If I know that the author writes well, then I know that s/he will give me the best of that category. There are some categories that I have a strong resistance to, but even those can contain gems. SelenaKittyn's Halloween entry, for instance, was an incest story; normally those leave me cold, but that one was extremely well-written and had superb character developement. It did what a very good story can do for any category: remind us of what it's capable of when we move beyond simplistic application of it as a fetish and toward examining what it can do to push character development and plot tensions to a powerful culmination.

Norajane, thank you very much for the kind words on "Will." They are much appreciated.

Yup..

Same here. I have read stories in cats I normally avoid, and liked them.

It really is the authour that makes the story.

I've read--and edited--stories in cats I normally avoid, either because the authors were friends or simply because I knew they are excellent writers.

Exactly, and well put.

Editing is entirely different from reading for me. I only copyedit, nothing in depth, so category means nothing.

I've only had one so far that I sent back stating I couldn't edit it because of the content. (That was earlier today, coincidentally enough) Mommy/baby/diaper fetish, as far as I could tell by skimming. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. It's just too icky a concept for me.

I look at lit catagories the same way I look at genres -- a good story will transend most of the cliches and trappings of the genre. I've checked story lists from writers here who interest me and found myself where I wouldn't ordinarily go. I think I'm repeating others when I say it is the author who makes a story work -- or who lets a story fail.

Of course, I'm a really picky reader, and I do mean PICKY. If a story doesn't grab me within a few pages (length makes no difference) I will move on because the NEXT story might be stunning and I'm running out of time. If I find particular subject matter repulsive, yet the story grabs me, I'll read on (I've read a fair amount of horror that way). If my revulsion overcomes my interest, I'll stop.

If someone asks me to read and comment on a story, I usually ask them very specific questions about what they want from me, and I include a caveat that I can back out any time without recrimination. Comments should be helpful, and if the subject matter is overcoming me, I can't make a useful comment. Who needs to have that loaded on them?

1. Would you?
2. Have you?
3. If you would, are there limits to what cats you'd be willing to read, even of a friend/co-author.
4. Is there a cat you would not read of your own accord, but would read if asked?

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. No
5. Anal, Celebrities, Gay Male, Interracial but see answer 3.

By following AH members' submissions I have found some very interesting stories that I would not normally have read. I also look at the Top Lists of each category from time to time and enjoy the quality of the writing even if the subject matter doesn't appeal. If there is an AH name in the Top List then I am more likely to read that story.

I woudn't read Incest or non consent stories. I really cannot get my head round why people find these topics a turn on.

I don't read gay, lesbian, anal, alien or celebtrity stories normally, but would if a friend asked me to. Nothing against these catagories and I quite understand why people might find them erotic; they just aren't my bag.

1. yes

3. yes
4. yes

I read a lesbian story from an AH author. Not my usual category at all, but enjoyed the writing nevertheless. I wasn't asked to read it, but enjoyed this person's comments on the boards so much, I got curious about her writing.

The only category that truly makes me hesitate is erotic horror. I suppose one day I'll venture forth when an author piques my interest, but not today.

I seldom read Loving Wives, but did read one recently because Hallowed Eve wrote it. She pulled it off, I'll have to say.

Have done it, will do it, and I won't read Anal or Incest unless I erally like someone who asks me to.
